Good intro book
By R. Rose
I purchased this book to help me with an Intro to GIS course. The book is very detailed in it's presentation of how to use ArcCatalog and ArcMap. At times, however, it seems that the author wrote it for someone who'd never turned on a computer. I found the first 150 pages to be extremely boring. Other times, my ArcMap 9.3 didn't match up with his step by step instructions and I had use my instructor as a resource to figure out how to complete the exercise. Overall it's a well written book but the mismatched instructions cause me to give it a 4 star rating.

Best used to get GIS concepts
By Dennis Dixon
With the distribution of ArcGIS 10, this book (and the exercises therein) must be treated as "reference material for GIS concepts". Although this is a concern for anyone dealing with upgraded programs, it seems especially severe in Esri's transition from 9.3 to 10. I'm sure this book was great "at the time"; unfortunately, the time has passed.

Great book
By A. Navarrete Pacheco
Great Book, has everything for an introduction, the only low point is that some topics are treated very short (one page), but well, for an introductory book is enough. ;-)
