PreSchool-Grade 3-This cassette read-along of the Caldecott Honor picture book by John Steptoe (Lothrop, 1987) is an extremely effective presentation of a traditional Zimbabwe folk tale about a man with two daughters the deceitful, selfish Manyara and her sister Nyasha, who is good and generous. When the King sends for a bride, he chooses Nyasha after appearing to her disguised as a snake and a young boy. Narrator Robin Miles' intonation and pacing have an African cadence. Her voice is pleasant, and she varies her tones to create the different characters. Sound effects of jungle animals, rushing water, and background voices add to the presentation. The sound of a page being turned is used to cue listeners to follow the text in the book. This should be included in all library audio collections for young children.

Mufaro was a happy man. Everyone agreed that his two daughters were very beautiful. Nyasha was kind and considerate as well as beautiful, but everyone -- except Mufaro -- knew that Manyara was selfish, badtempered, and spoiled.

When the king decided to take a wife and invited "The Most Worthy and Beautiful Daughters in the Land" to appear before him, Mufaro declared proudly that only the king could choose between Nyasha and Manyara. Manyara, of course, didn't agree, and set out to make certain that she would be chosen.

John Steptoe has created a memorable modem fable of pride going before a fall, in keeping with the moral of the folktale that was his inspiration. He has illustrated it with stunning paintings that glow with the beauty, warmth, and internal vision of the land and people of his ancestors.

About the Author
John Steptoe was born in New York and wrote and illustrated many successful children's books. His work was often informed by his experiences as a black child living in near-ghetto conditions. He is known for the almost photographic realism of his drawings. John Steptoe died in New York in 1989.

An African Cinderella story deeper than the European version

This book is usually described as an African variation on Cinderella and it has a similar story - when a king invites the women of his kingdom to come to his palace so that he can choose the most worthy to be his wife, two sisters appear before him and he chooses the kinder of the two. But this version of Cinderella is infinitely superior to the tale most Americans grow up on. The European Cinderella is a beloved story, but it contains a lot of odd messages. Cinderella is both good and beautiful, her stepsisters are ugly inside and out. Is the implication that only attractive people can be good? Cinderella's "goodness" doesn't seem to consist of anything but being a doormat. And when the prince falls in love with her, he doesn't seem to know anything about her except that she is beautiful.
In John Steptoe's version, inspired by an African folktale, the two sisters are both beautiful, but the beauty of one, Manyara, is only external. Her sister, Nyasha, the "Cinderella" character is beautiful inside and out. And her goodness doesn't consist just of doing what she's told to do. She's kind to all creatures, even Manyara. Furthermore, the king chooses her to be his queen not because of her beauty, but because he has secretly seen her her kindness and generosity (and her sister's meaness) in action. He chooses a good soul, not just a beautiful face. This version has all the elements that make Cinderella a classic, but ethically it's far, far better.
And as if that weren't enough, the illustrations in this book are sheer magic. More than any book we've read, this one has inspired in my daughter a fascination with Africa. The details of Steptoe's paintings, drawn from the plants, animals and architecture of Zimbabwe, are glorious. Everytime we read the book, my daughter and I talk about new things we notice about the pictures. I can't think of a single children's book I like better than this one.

In the eye of the beholder

I love how folktales around the world contain so many elements similar to one another. In John Steptoe's elegant, "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters", careful readers pick up echoes of such myths as Psyche & Cupid, Cinderella, and Roses & Pearls. Yet the story is inspired by an original folktale from 1895. Dedicating this book to the children of South Africa, Steptoe has created one of the most beautiful and eloquent picture books of our time.
Once there was a man with two beautiful daughters. Both were equal in loveliness, but different in temperament. While Nyasha was kind and good, Manyara was vain and cruel. When the king announces that he would like to meet these two girls and decide, between the two of them, which one he shall wed, the sly Manyara does her darndest to become queen and make her sister her servant.
The tale is vaguely disturbing in all the right ways. When Manyara sets out to get a jump on the king's affections by reaching the palace first, she comes across a series of odd sequences. A boy (with ears Spock himself would envy) is denied food, laughing trees are laughed back at, and a man with his head under his arm is ignored callously. The moral of the story is, of course, that to be good and kind is far better than to be cold and mean. Steptoe's illustrations lift this tale from being merely good to extraordinary. There is a realism to the characters that leaves the reader with little doubt that they were fashioned on real people. Steptoe has likewise stayed faithful to the land of Zimbabwe, where this tale is set. He has been inspired by everything from the architecture to the flora and fauna. But what I liked best was the clothing. The garments and jewelry of this story encase the characters, making each person practically a member of royalty. Take especial care to note the wedding clothes at the end of the story, as well as the view of the village. The story is gorgeous in both what it says and how it says it. One of the best books for children ever written. Ever.

In Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, John Steptoe combines stunning illustrations to create almost mystical surroundings for his characters, surroundings which serve to distinguish between the baser human characteristics, greed and pride, and those which we as humans must emulate, such as mercy and compassion. Steptoe creates the story's setting using the flora and fauna of an ancient ruin in Zimbabwe; the story itself is an English adaptation of a local African tale from today's indigenous inhabitants of the area. By encompassing a spiritual tale in realistic settings, Steptoe forces the reader to blur the line between reality and magic; however, this "magic" galvanizes to action by drawing distinctions between compassion and greed with which young readers can easily identify. This is the story of two sisters, Manyara and Nyasha, the beautiful daughters of Mufaro, two believably human girls who embody the characteristics of pride and humility. Children will quickly see that Manyara is selfish and ill tempered and that her promise to make her sister a servant in her house is based on jealousy. On the other hand, Nyasha is calm and kind; an aura of peace surrounds every action. Her singing, the villagers think, causes her garden to produce more bountifully than the others'. Even the animals find her friendly. She names and befriends a garden snake named Nyoka. The plot itself serves as a didactic tale with which children will identify. Themes of sibling rivalry and false appearances dominate the text. Steptoe mentions that the only person fooled into believing that Manyara is as kind as her sister is Mufaro, a theme that might resonate with children who endure the trials of living with siblings. The true test of character, however, comes when the King announces his search for a bride. In characteristic form, Manyara leaves in the middle of the night to unfairly secure the king's favor. In a form similar to many Anglo-Saxon fairy tales, she encounters three tests on the way to the king and fails miserably. A young boy begs for food; she brusquely pushes him aside. An old woman gives her invaluable advice about upcoming obstacles; she rejects the advice deliberately and proceeds in her journey. This obstinate behavior is rewarded when a five-headed monster greets her at the end of her journey. However, Steptoe also allows this character to partially redeem herself. While fleeing from the monster, Manyara encounters Mufaro and Nyasha. Showing consideration for another person for the first time in this narrative, Manyara begs her father and sister to avoid the palace. The monster knew her faults, she tells them, and the outcome of the story suggests that this was enough to cause her to change her ways. Steptoe toys with the fine line dividing the spiritual world from the material world, as well as building a suspenseful plot. It is this unconcern for the shape of the living being, be it male or female, young or old, animal or human, supernatural or common, that Steptoe stresses. Children will enjoy the reality of his illustrations, while adults will realize the deeper underlying message about the common threads that bind all human life: respect and admiration bring great reward.

good, but just not enough

This would be a good book to give to my mom. Assuming my mom isn't a total pervert, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Sadly, what I *really* wanted from this book was more emphasis on romantic partners. That to me is kinda? what the title implies, and what I wanted to get out of reading it. I remember the confusion and scariness and "wtf am I even doing anyway" stuff that happened when my partner admitted to me that he was extremely kinky, and THAT was what I wanted this book to emphasize. It's mentioned in brief, and I appreciate that, but I wanted more on the "okay so my partner is kinky and I am willing to try being kinky also... now what? do I just go buy some leather pants?" question. That seems to be a pretty common problem, and one that existing literature frequently stinks at addressing. (Most "baby" BDSM literature is focused on "I have a kink, how can I act on it" rather than "my partner has a kink, how do I figure out how to incorporate that.")

I didn't really go for the "Dear ___" letters, either. At first because they were done as images and not pull-quotes, so in the Kindle version, they're very hard to read. Then, when I could actually read them, I just got annoyed. The person who got harassed at work for writing kinky emails to their Dominant on their work computer? I am sorry that happened. It sucks that your boss is a jerk. But why on earth were you writing (again) kinky emails to your Dominant on your work computer? That's... not really sympathy-inducing, at least to me, and it sure ain't helping with the idea that us kinksters are all-encompassing perverts who are incapable of NOT being perverts when it's neither necessary nor appropriate.

Good starting point, a little to mainstream for the issue in my opinion.

I heard great things about this book and bought one for my friend who is coming out. Of course, I had to read it before I could give it to her for that purpose.

I found the round about way they approach some of the subjects bothersome. There are several areas that, as someone with extensive experience in these activities, I found evasive or poorly informed enough to consider not give the book.

If you are more than 50 shades style kinky, read this book before you give it to a loved one. Depending on how they read this, it may not actually help.

Great Book by great authors

I LOVE Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy's Topping and Bottoming books. That said, we loved this one also. I bought it for my boyfriend who is somewhat knowledgeable about the community already, but he enjoyed having everything spelled out in ink. We especially enjoyed the last two chapters regarding negotiating with your partner needs and desires, as well as being open about solutions.
These girls have been an invaluable tool in my relationship! Fantastic buy.

The authors provide an overview of logistics, elements of logistics systems including order management and customer service, protective packaging and materials handling, domestic and industrial transportation management, inventory, warehousing and supply management, analyzing, designing, and implementing a logistics system. This eighth edition of Contemporary Logistics reflects a global landscape vastly different from when the previous edition appeared in 1999. Today's organizations operate in an environment that is influenced by the terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001, threats of war and possible nuclear war, a worldwide economic slowdown, and the ethical meltdowns of multinational companies such as Ahold, Enron and WorldCom. While these and other events have resulted in increased challenges for logistics managers, the logistics discipline still remains fun, exciting, and dynamic, and these characteristics are reflected in our revision.

The reader will find additions, deletions, and modifications of content that reflect reviewer comments, student comments, and the authors' workplace, consulting, and research experiences. One of the most prominent changes in the eighth edition involves a greater discussion of supply chains and supply-chain management. These modifications reflect the growing importance of supply chains in recent years, as well as recognition that logistics is a major component of the supply-chain process. To this end, Chapter 1 has a new title, "Logistics and the Supply Chain," and Chapter 2, "The Supply-Chain Concept," has been substantially revised. Moreover, a new chapter, "Supply Management" (Chapter 11), has been added to reflect upstream supply-chain considerations.

The new edition is also characterized by expanded discussions of information technology. For example, Chapter 3, "Logistics and Information Technology," is new to this edition and reflects information's critical role in contemporary logistics management. Moreover, this edilion contains numerous examples of the Internet's growing influence on logistics and supplychain management, including order management, transportation, and customer service.

We have changed about 20 percent of the end-of-chapter cases in this edition, with a particular focus on increasing their international flavor, as can be seen in Case 8-1, "Aero Marine Logistics." Some figures and tables are also new to this edition. One feature that we continue to provide is cartoons, which highlight the humorous aspects of logistics.

The current edition of Contemporary Logistics has been prepared by two coauthors, Paul Murphy and Don Wood. We gratefully acknowledge the substantial contributions that both James C. Johnson and Daniel L. Wardlow made to earlier editions.

It is with profound sadness that the work and passion of Don Wood are acknowledged. Don passed away unexpectedly and late in the production process fox the eighth edition. He loved both the logistics discipline and the teaching profession, and each edition of Contemporary Logistics has represented his contributions—and his legacy—to both constituencies. Don was a husband, a father, and a grandfather; he was an educator, a scholar, and a friend. He was a kind and thoughtful person who possessed a terrific sense of humor. Don, we'll miss you.

Excellent Logistics Text

I used this text in a graduate logistics class, and while clearly written and suitable for beginners, it is also excellent for more advanced students. The eighth edition is very current with discussions of topics like JIT, JIT II, and early RFID technology (although much has happened in the last year in RFID, already making the text somewhat dated in that regard.) I found that the case studies were well written and the real world examples cited in the book were well conceived to illustrate the intended points. Learning goals and reviews were useful, and while I did not use all of the reviews, the ones I did use assisted my comprehension of the material.

This book is great for an aspiring logistician or someone already in the workforce as a logistics or supply chain professional. This is definitely one of the best texts I have been exposed to in my graduate business classes, and I firmly believe that it would be equally useful in an upper level undergraduate class as well. I deducted one star not for any shortcoming of the book per se, but because of the outrageous price, which is, of course no fault of the author.

About the Author

Gail E. Tompkins is Professor Emerita at California State University, Fresno. Currently, she works with teachers in their kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms and leads staff-development programs on reading and writing. Dr. Tompkins was inducted into the California Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments in the field of reading, and she’s received the prestigious Provost’s award for Excellence in Teaching at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Tompkins is the author of six other books published by Pearson: Language Arts: Patterns of Practice, Language Arts Essentials, Teaching Writing: Balancing Process and Product, 50 Literacy Strategies, and two grade-specific versions of this text: Li teracy in the Early Grades: A Successful Start for PreK-4 Readers and Writers and Literacy in the Middle Grades: Teaching Reading and Writing to Fourth Through Eighth Graders. During the past three decades, Dr. Tompkins has also worked with kindergarten through college-level writing teachers at National Writing Project sites in California and Oklahoma.

Buy the 5th Ed (save money and hassle)

The book itself is a great resource, but I really regret buying new. The 6th edition has typos and is missing entire sections that were available in the 5th edition (of which our teacher references during class). It is not a matter of page numbers changing, but entire teaching methods in the compendium were removed (even though they are not outdated!) and a section on ESL parent connection is in the 5th ed. and not the 6th. It is a waste of money to buy this newer edition.

If your instructor uses Pearson for homework, etc., you will have to pay an additional $99 to Pearson for the Code. In this case, buy either the hard copy, or by direct from Pearson for the eBook.

seems like it was designed for elementary students

Written in a wordy style that becomes very tedious to read. This book could have been half as long and half the price. Teachers are professionals and can be addressed as such. The kid handwriting fonts and random pictures of pigeons are silly and annoying.

About the Author
Yevgen Barsukov is an IP development manager for battery management systems business units at Texas Instruments. He holds an M.S. in organic chemistry from Kiev National University in the Ukraine and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Kiel Christian Albrecht University in Germany.

Jinrong Qian is a sector manager and distinguished member of technical staff for battery management systems at Texas Instruments. He holds M.S. degrees in power electronics from both the University of Central Florida and Zhejiang University in China and earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

DETAILED BATTERY POWER MANAGEMENT RESOURCE!!!

Are you an engineer or a curious do-it-yourself enthusiast? If you are, then this book is for you. Authors Yevgen Barsukov and Jinrong Qian, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that aims to make it clear that batteries and battery management electronics that are used, should be able to operate in the most efficient and safest way.

Authors Barsukova and Qian, begin by summarizing the best handling practices based on a particular chemistry for the most common rechargeable battery types in order to ensure the best longevity of the battery; as well as, adequate safety of the device. Next, the authors discuss battery charging algorithms, battery charging system topologies, design considerations, the main battery charger applications, and the popular battery charger ICs.
Then, they show you how to accomplish a remodeling of battery designers’ thinking; and, offer a practical solution to all of the challenges that arise from highly energetic mobile power sources. In addition, the authors discuss why when multiple cells are connected in series, the cell voltage is not always equal to the pack voltage divided by the number of cells. They continue by describing battery fuel gauging, which is the expression that everyone is using to describe what this little chip inside the battery is doing. The authors then briefly analyze the system-level ESD, EMI minimization, and specific design considerations for each piece of the end equipment. Finally, the authors apply the principles of the different ingredients of a successful battery-operated system to specific portable systems to demonstrate them in action; and, to provide you with an actionable reference template that you can use as a starting point for your own development efforts for such systems or expand to other systems with similar properties.

This most excellent book covers rechargeable battery fundamentals, explaining how any battery operates and describing the common factors to consider when choosing a battery. Furthermore, this great book explains the how and why of battery management systems; and, provides would-be designers of battery management systems and chargers with enough information to be successful. Finally, the book combines all of the various pieces of knowledge about battery management, and provides examples of complete battery-operated systems that can be cut-and-pasted into your designs.

Good first text but falls short on details

This is an excellent text to get to know the overall landscape of batteries and power management. I would not recommend paying full price though. The state of the art (almost) is described in reasonable detail. The text falls short in several areas - battery chemistry and how batteries work is treated almost as if the reader were already familiar with the topic. For example the figures on cathodes and anodes and the nomenclature is not clear at all. The use of black and white images of poor resolution makes it hard to use it as a fundamental text. Surely there are excellent images and animations available in color to describe the charging and discharging process in li-ion batteries. Fortunately several university lectures are available to fill in this gap. Another grouse of mine is that while the text claims to discuss fuel gauging algorithms, the finer details which are in some sense public domain by way of patents is treated cautiously. Given the authors are employees of a company, this is understandable from a trade secret point of view but as a text to enthuse the reader the text disappoints. In this regard, some of the app notes from TI or other companies are a better read and free of cost. References to literature are minimal and reader may have to dig into patent documents to really understand how battery gauging works in practice. A final point is the lack of exercises that would make for using this text in a classroom setting. At 50% of full price it was a great buy. I wish the authors take note of the shortcomings and come out with a color print 2nd edition.

Exceptional battery management book

I use this book both for advanced technical training, as well as training people who are new to the battery power management industry. It has a very comprehensive approach and covers topics ranging from battery chemistry fundamentals, battery safety, system considerations, to design examples. I have bought a few extra copies to share with colleagues.
