Report on a Genius’ Master Class

The volume presents the work of the Vienna Applied Arts Master Class which Professor Zaha Hadid has been teaching with Professor Patrik Schumacher since the beginning of the millennium. They explored all scales, from whole cities, via urban masterplans and large building complexes, all the way to furniture, fashion and product design. The book reflects complexity and dynamics of our time.
Zaha Hadid’s credo is the creation of new living spaces that enhance life and its beauty. All along she has invested in the continuous upgrading of the methodology and computer based design techniques.
Zaha is a catalyst, multiplying the potential of everyone she comes in contact with. Mascha Veech (p.77) reports on Zaha’s unique ability to teach students not what already exists in architecture, but its unexplored possibilities. Zaha charges her students in their quest to develop things that have never been there before, with enormous energy and catalytic power. She drives them to engage in a process of renewal and motivates new generations of architects to renew architecture itself.

Changing Architectural Minds

The reader becomes aware of the revolution Zaha Hadid has set of in the heads of her Master class, pushing the limits of imagination. Architecture is a dynamic field of interacting forces, not a static grid. Professor Hadid’s life-long commitment to the teaching of architecture provides a remarkable record of more than just exceptional teaching and unexpected, original, students projects, learning and growth. For Zaha the work and energy of her students has always been a source of optimism. Her capacity to change architectural habits is at the focus of this book.
In my field of Economics and Entrepreneurship, technology is a key driver of change. New objects devised by engineers are seen to change the way we live. Studio Hadid is a great example of innovation pushed from the creative side. Experiments focus on the search to define space for contemporary society whilst applying the latest technology for the analysis and design.
Architecture is not about the finished building but more about an ability to enable and facilitate change in a changing world. Professor Hadid allows her Master class to create the future by imagining the unthinkable.
