Fighting Ships is worth your time.

I am rating this book for what it is...a guide to specific ship designs. Turnbull is the premier popular historian of Japanese and Korean military history. This book is excellent when combined with Turnbull's other works, including "Samurai Invasion" and "The Samurai, A Military History."

Japan's Korean War experience at the beginning of the 17th century is an eerie foretaste of America's experience in the 20th century. This book is an invaluable addition to the library of any student of the era, and the maps, pictures and diagrams make Turnbull's other works come to life.

A useful study

You are not going to build big and powerful navies without money and resources. Empires like China clearly spent much on their navy.

This is a very short book but there is much detail here. It had many fine illustrious. It could have used more. With subject matter like this, no matter how much you explain it in words, you need a diagram.

It did stun me the use of paddle wheels by the Chinese. I would have liked to have seen more the relative merits of oars like Westerns used vs paddle wheels. The Korean turtles were interesting too.

So more details on the battles would have been nice too. Maybe this could be book three.

Finally ... hope for a way out!

Dr. Les Carter has done it again! No wonder he is called "America's Anger Expert." With The Anger Trap he has put together his years of experience and wisdom on this important subject to provide us with a way out of this insidious trap called anger. Years ago I read his first book on the subject, Good 'N Angry (now out of print, I believe), and more recently completed his very practical best-seller, The Anger Workbook. Both exercises helped me deal with issues that subtly yet surely were negatively affecting my life and relationships.
Now comes, I believe, Dr. Carter's "magnum opus." One of the values of The Anger Trap is that Carter not only identifies anger and it's nature, but deals with the root causes (such as fear, loneliness, rejection, insecurity, and especially pain.) "Angry people are hurting, fragile people," Carter points out. And, "At the heart of anger is a cry for respect." But, to me, one of the most insightful observations Carter makes is, "As illogical as it may be, it can seem to outside observers that chronically angry people have a strong commitment to keeping distasteful emotions alive." Carter encourages us to deal with these underlying causes if we are to have any kind of meaningful victory over anger.
The chapter on dependency and hidden insecurity (Chapter 6: "Insecurity's Hold on Angry People") is especially interesting and illuminating. In this chapter Carter discusses how angry people are so busy trying to make others take responsibility for their own emotional stability that they stay stuck in the anger they want to be free of. But, my favorite chapter is called "Higher Priorities," (Chapter 14) where Carter leads us down the path to deliverance from the destructive aspects of anger. He points out the need to make a commitment to traits like kindness, patience, and forgiveness. It shows what life can be like outside the anger trap.
Over the years I have found Dr. Carter's books to be right on target--insightful, easy-to-read, and filled with practical wisdom and application. The Anger Trap is no exception ... and a welcome addition to his valuable contributions. Everyone with any kind of anger issues should buy this book and digest it deliberately and carefully. As Dr. Carter reminds us, we all have choices. We can choose to face the ugly dimensions of our anger and be freed from this trap forever!

The Best Book on Anger out There

I've dealt with anger issues for years and have heard plenty of advice and couselling, but this is by far the most practical guide I've encountered. Les's writing style makes his concepts easy to understand, even though the concepts themselves are not simplistic. Les has distilled his 30 years of counseling experience into very useable advice on how to overcome the negative consequences of mishandled anger. While many other authors and counselors major primarily on the causes of anger, they mostly grow frustratingly silent on how to change the negative behavior that stems from anger. While Les doesn't offer a promise that you'll never be angry again if you apply his suggestions, his insights are very helpful in minimizing the harm to others and yourself when that inevitable angry moment comes.

This book has been life-changing for me. I heartily recommend it to anyone trying to come to grips with their destructive anger-related behaviors.

I was first attracted to this book after realizing I am frustrated or angry most of the time. After 5 chapters, I can say that this is what no one ever tells you. Read this book even if you do not consider yourself an angry person. And order one for everyone you care about. A+++++ Many thanks to the authors for this easy to read epiphany. I have been in the dark tooo long. It is time to live to my full potential. With this information I can end the cycle of generation after generation of poor emotional/coping skills.

His style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events and the theme of war. In 1913, Bierce traveled to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. While traveling with rebel troops, he disappeared without a trace.

Only 30 pages long! More like a booklet.

This is not a book, it is a booklet. I was expecting a full size paperback. I overlooked the fact that it is only 30 pages. Too expensive for what you get so I returned it.

I have never seen a computer book like this before

So many programming books are dry as the paper they are printed on. Most courses in programming are equally dry. With this book the dry spell is over. Each chapter covers an interesting subject quickly and well. Yet the subjects covered are shockingly advanced. Genetic algorithms, neural networks, etc. Wow. These are topics that are usually each covered by at least one book for each topic. The mathematical explanations are the some of the simplest I have seen, ever.

I have been programming for over 20 years and thus have read so many computer books that were serious chores to read so, again, I can't quite express just how different this book is. It is like the book was written and the all the confusing bits were boiled away leaving this final product. I am truely at a loss for how to describe the virtues of this book without sounding like a marketing sound bite so I will say what it isn't. It isn't pedantic, academic, confusing, or contorted. The examples in the book are interesting or maybe even better described as cool. Often in CS books the examples are often uninteresting and thus unmemorable.

This book reminds me of a the opening of a great book on calculus called Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson where he basically says that most mathematicians write their texts to impress and show off how very clever they are but that he thought any fool could learn calulus so he removed the pedantry and made a great book.

I took the Nature of Code class as a master candidate at NYU ITP back in the Spring of 2012 with Dan Shiffman. Went through pretty much all of the material in this book as it iteratively evolved. This final product is amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in motion/physics/programmable art/games/etc. Dan is a great teacher, and this book is definitively reflective of his ability to communicate the concepts behind the Processing language in a simple and intuitive manner ... with a good bit of personality mixed in as well. There are wonderful illustrations and tons of supplementary materials online to make this book even better. It is also pink ... and that is awesome. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this book and it should be on the bookshelf of artists/designers/and coders of all kinds!

Excellent and accessible text on real-world simulation.

The Nature of Code addresses coding nature simulations in the Processing language. It covers real-world physics, using physics libraries (such as JBox2D), cellular automata, flocking and following behavior, and neural networking. While some of these subjects are daunting, Shiffman writes clearly, explains fundamental concepts, and leads the reader through each subject with code snippets and complete sketches. There are also specific chapter challenges and an overall, book-long coding challenge for the reader. This is not a beginner's book (see "Learning Processing" for that), but a book that coders with some experience in Processing can use with ease and profit.

Processing is not the ideal platform for game programming, but the first four chapters of this book present a solid physics background useful in any programming language, while the chapter on Physics libraries explains how to use physics engines, such as JBox2D, that were used in creation of famous apps like "Angry Birds". It would be of great use to aspiring games coders. The cellular automata and animal behavior chapters likewise would be of great use to coders working in robotics.

This book would be a perfect text for a high-school level physics class, as students could quickly learn and apply principles of gravitational attraction, force application, and Newtonian physics to their own computer simulations. The processing language used is available at no cost, and the book's accompanying code examples are well documented and useful. Not all the exercises set for the reader are solved, but enough examples are provided to encourage the reader to explore further.

Each of the seven Processing books I own (disclosure: I have only purchased the early PDF version of "The Nature of Code" ) have a different perspective and, ultimately, target a different audience. The Nature of Code, with its focus on real world physics, provides a solid base for both novice and more experienced coders. It's well written, useful, and a valuable addition to the growing body of Processing references.
