A very original, hilarious novel that is sheer fun to read. The 12 Greek Gods of Olympus are alive and well in the 20th century and they are crammed together in a London townhouse and none of them ate too happy about it. Nor are they about their "new" jobs they have to perform (even Gods in today's society have to have a paycheck), Artemis (Goddess of the Hunt) works as a dog-walker; Aphrodite (Goddess of beauty) is working as a telephone sex operator; and Apollo (God of the Sun) is a TV psychic. However, their world really is turned-upside-down when their mortal housekeeper, Alice & would-be boyfriend, Neil get involved. the most zaniest, amusing, poignant collision between gods and mortals since Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

The best in this kind are but shadows and the worst no worse

I picked up this book at Heathrow while waiting about, and was instantly charmed--enough to even pry my wallet out of its hidey hole and buy the thing. It entertained me for a good part of the flight back home: silly stuff indeed, but it made me laugh. It is just an elaborate what-if joke, but the author is a clever lady who writes clearly, knows her Greek mythology pretty well, and sets her story in a believable London--splendid parks, ancient houses, tea shops, sleazy sex clubs, and all. Pratchett readers will recognize the idea of gods quite literally thriving or failing on the belief of the people--his Small Gods is based it: "It's a god-eat-god world." But this is a very different treatment, with an Orpheus and Eurydice plot, and some rather harrowing scenes of a threatened end of the world catastrophe--averted, I hasten to add. This is a comedy, after all, and must end happy. Which it does!

Sitcom of the Gods
By bensmomma
I just read that Ben Stiller's production company has optioned "Gods" for development as a TV series; I hope this hysterically funny yet sweet-tempered farce is not destroyed by a sitcom mentality.
In "Gods Behaving Badly," the gods of Olympus have been holed up in a decrepit London flat for almost 400 years of decay. Forced to make a living, Aphrodite turns to phone sex, Artemis walks dogs on Hampstead Heath, Dionysus runs a sleazy bar, and Apollo has a lame fortune-telling show on cable TV. Eros (Cupid) shoots Apollo with love's arrow, and his lusty gaze falls on poor timid Alice, a cleaning lady attending the show with Neil, a structural engineer who secretly loves her. In pursuit of Alice, Apollo comes close to destroying the world, and nerdish Neil must descend into the Underworld to rescue Alice (and the world) from death.
This *does* I admit sound like a sitcom premise; what rescues "Gods Behaving Badly" is the author's witty dialogue and almost romantic sympathy for her characters - even the naughty ones. Apollo's pursuit of little Alice has a kind of Marx-Brothers manic frenzy to it, and for bawdy comedy the book rivals Christopher Moore (one of my favorite authors), but with a more coherent plot, believe it or not. Read it before television gets hold of it!
