The late Genevieve Davis Ginsburg, M.S., founded Widowed to Widowed Services, a support group in Tucson, Arizona. She received the Jefferson Award and the Arizona Governor's Award for her social service.

Not as Helpful for Younger Widows

Overall, this book is good for those having to endure the experience of being a widow, but it seems geared more towards women of another, older generation where women traditionally didn't work outside of the home and depended on their husbands to do the typical "male" things, like handle finances, home repair, etc. I lost my husband very recently and very suddenly, but have had a career for a long time and certainly know how to handle all the finances, etc. The book assumes that widows totally identify themselves as "homemakers" and through their husbands. It gives advice on how to hire handymen, assuming that most women cannot do home repairs or easily learn how to do them. Thus, I really couldn't relate to much of what was in this book since the advice seemed so dated to me. There are still some helpful chapters regarding the grieving process, but overall, if you're younger than maybe 65, this might not be the most helpful book to read.

Stepmom Loved It

Purchased this as a gift for my stepmom, once my father passed away. She enjoyed reading it, especially right after, and it seemed to ease done of these pain, knowing that she wasn't the only one that has been through this (sometimes we can forget that when in mourning). There were many illustrations and examples in the trading material. So, from her perspective, I give it five stars.

Not for every widow

The book strikes me as being outdated -- which isn't entirely surprising, since it was written nearly 20 years ago. The general premise is that the widow has built her life around her husband and defined her identity through him, and now that he's dead, she's left totally floundering. It tries to provide encouragement and hope by assuring us that, now that we're no longer under our husbands' thumbs, we can discover who we are and what we like and we can -- finally!!! -- build lives for ourselves; and that we will be much richer and more fulfilled as a result.
Well, it may be very good for the older woman who long ago made the decision to allow herself to be entirely subjugated by her husband ... but ... gosh, I was widowed the first time ten years before this book was written, and I would have considered it outdated even back then.
It is well-written, and it does contain a lot of good advice for some of those older housewives ... but I would have preferred a book that either targets a wider audience, or else warns that it is not for the woman with a mind, let alone a career, of her own.
