About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

An excellent reference book.

An excellent reference work, for anyone interested in the history and technical aspects of the Japanese swords. It allows me to see and understand the different features on my various replica swords. The true collector swords are out of my financial reach, but the better replicas echo the features of the original swords. It also allows us to appreciate the more artistic elements. The book provides good info on the various time periods in Japan, the different smiths and their schools, the changes in blade and fitting styles through time. An indispensible book for the enthusiast. I am very pleased with it. I almost gave it five stars, but I feel it should have more thorough information on the actual making of the blades and fittings, and color plates. That would have made it perfect.

1st Edition is good; 2nd Edition is even better

In my review on the 1st edition (Dec 2005), "This book is more concentrated on diffusers than absorbers, with extensive care on Schroeder diffusers... To illustrate my point: you cannot find the term "anechoic chamber" in the index."

But now, you can find the term here, and much more.

Also, I have noticed that after the 1st edition is published, many wooden and plastic Schroeder Diffusers from many manufacturers are suddenly available in the market: for audiophile, monitoring studio, pro-audio applications, etc. Obviously it is highly influenced by the book, as a solid theorotical background is now here. Before that, very few commercial available products; you may need to DIY, or chicken egg cartons if want one...

BTW, the great scientist Prof. Manfred Schroeder has passed away in Dec 2009. A big loss for all of us...

nice balance between theory, design, and application

I bought this book as part of my search for the best approach to acoustical treatment for my monitoring environment. I'm primarily working with surround film sound and need to trust what my ears are telling me. My room is fairly decent, but that doesn't mean I completely trust it.

I am an engineer, (B.S.E.E., not acoustical), so by definition a lazy S.O.B.. Because of this, I would have preferred much more focus on design and application that answered all of the questions specific to my personal acoustical environment. Of course I also realize that Cox and D'Antonio probably didn't want to write a book that was addressed specifically to me and what I personally want to know. I think they came pretty close to the next best thing.

They have given some really solid, easy to understand information on the design and application of absorbers and diffusers, balanced with the underlying theory. I feel like this book left me in a really strong starting place for the practicalities of designing the absorption and diffusion I need in my acoustical space. For those questions that can't be answered by simple concepts or fomulae, they've delved fairly deeply into the theory and mathematics underneath.

For those like myself, who are not acoustical engineers and only want simple answers to, "How do I fix my room?", this book will give you a treasure trove of information. However be warned, it probably won't answer exactly what your room needs and the mathematics for you to figure it out on your own can get very complicated very fast. This is no fault of the authors'. Sound propagation gets very complicated very fast, thus our need for real acoustical engineers. This book is really geared toward acousticians. There are enough cases, however, where the physics can be reduced to simpler models and rules to make this book very worthwhile for a non-acoustician. You will end up with some very solid ideas for where to start to fix the your space's reaction to sound. You'll probably still need to engage some trial and error (or nasty mathematics), but if (when?) your space fails to behave exactly as you expected, you'll at least have the background and confidence to know where to start tweaking even if you are not a mathematician or a physicist.

Overall, I found this book VERY helpful and informative.

About the Author
Steve Huston was born and raised in Alaska. He studied at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design. Graduating with his BFA, Huston began illustrating. His client list eventually included such names as Caesar's Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, Huston decided a change was in order. He's developed his unique teaching method over 30 years, teaching drawing, painting and composition- first at his Alma Mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brother, Dreamworks, and most other major studios.Influences include among others Titian, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, the early American Tonalists, the homespun character of the WPA art projects, and the heroic and graphic inventions of the American Comic Book form.Since then, Steve has shown his fine art pieces around the world. A Bit of a Let Down

What am I missing? I am a big fan of Steve Huston the artist and instructor. I have seen his videos, which are very thorough and detailed. I admire his skill. The book was a let down. It didn't seem to surpass other books on the market and in some ways, fell short of them.

There is less instruction than I hoped. Much of the text needs a re write for clarity as well as some additions for depth. The pictures don't clearly support the text, at least not easily. The authors fabulous sketches aren't even here in abundance, and while it isn't a show off book, if the instruction is lacking, which I believe it is, then at least give us more eye candy or material to copy.

This is much more like a fancy set of notes for those who have studied with Steve Huston or taken his classes.

Negative reviews don't make me popular but I have to call it as I see it. It pains me to say it, but I think there are better books out there.

So you can get some idea where I am coming from and determine if this review is has relevance to you, some books I really like are Mike Matessi's Drawing Force and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals, Rankin's Fast Sketching Techniques, and Mellem's Sketching People.

At long last a book that tells you HOW to do things - I have hundreds of art books, most of them are barely disguised promotions or the art of the author, others order you to: "do this!" but never tell you "how", and you end up starting every drawing hoping for the best and being regularly disappointed.
Steve Huston's book is a blessing for all artists, it explains, shows and analyses in simple but precise terms the how-to that no one else explains. After reading once (and a half) this book I have already had several "ahah! but of course!" epiphanic moments, and I am beginning to know what I'm doing when I begin a drawing - if I do it wrong, no matter, I start again, I know the steps to follow.
Huston also tells us about the meaning of art, the way to freedom in art and gives us tons of examples of all steps in the drawing.
An invaluable, clear, useful book that I can't recommend enough. A beautiful one too, which is always a nice plus.
If you want to understand what you are doing when you do art, and not rely on luck each time you start a drawing, this is a much have book. Many thanks Mr Huston for sharing your knowledge and experience! - M.C.

A Concise but Thorough Look into the Mind of Steve Huston regarding Drawing

Great book. If you have the opportunity to learn from Mr. Huston via recorded lecture (or better yet, in person) you should sketch along with him and take notes, rather than watch him do all the work. Once you have taken your own notes and done your own work, this book is a great way to revisit his notes and ideas in his own words, and it's another chance for you to follow along and do additional work alongside his. The book is thorough but concise. The book doesn't cover much in the way of color or painting, but then again, it's a drawing book. If another book on painting is in the works the consider me already in line to buy it.
