Good Intro into Philosophy of Mind

As I write this, it is listed as $90, and I'm by no means suggesting it's worth that. But it is a nice book. Pitched as an introductory book on the subject, it may be a bit much for those who never took a philosophy course, but it isn't like reading Heidegger either.

Matthews begins with a brief overview of Aristotle's account of mind and body. From there, he moves to Descartes' dualism and classical materialism, which weigh heavily on the remainder of the book. Neither of these is deemed to provide a convincing view of what minds are. Throughout the book, Matthews discusses the 'minds' of animals, other people and computers, and focuses on thinkers such as Searle, Wittgenstein and Merleau-Ponty. This is not primarily a historical overview of philosophers of the mind, and most of the philosophers discussed are from post WW2.

About the Author
Jack L. Chalker was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 17, 1944. While still in high school, he began writing for the amateur science fiction press, and in 1960 he launched the Hugo-nominated amateur magazine Mirage. A year later he founded Mirage Press, which grew into a major specialty publisher of nonfiction and reference books on science fiction and fantasy.
His first novel, A Jungle of Stars, was published in 1976, and he became a full-time novelist two years later with the major popular success of Midnight at the Well of Souls. Chalker is an active conservationist and enjoys traveling, consumer electronics, and computers. He is also a noted speaker on science fiction and fantasy at numerous colleges and universities. He is a passionate lover of steamboats, in particular ferryboats, and has ridden more than three hundred ferries in the United States and elsewhere.

Watchers: I Read Them So You Don't Have To!

I read the original pentology in high school, and had fond memories of it. More than fond, really: part of the personal archive. I recently reread it and, you know? It was pretty good! The first book (Midnight at the Well of Souls) remains a classic rollicking fine adventure. The other two pairs are pretty good, maybe a bit unsubtle in some ways, but heck I'm able to channel my inner fourteen-year-old and still enjoy em. (My girlfriend, on the other hand, liked the first one, couldn't finish the second.)

I'm digging the series, and I want more, more! So I ordered all the books in The Watchers Of The Well. Big mistake.

The trilogy is fifteen hundred pages long, but easily has enough action to fill four or five very very short stories. Endless endless pages of description of nothing, just nothing. Mavra gets turned into a creature, everyone's trying to get to the Avenue. Nothing ever happens!

If you really just can't get enough, I recommend this: just skip to the third book, Gods of the Well of Souls. Seriously. It's tedious all by itself, and recounts endlessly the events of the first two, but at least you can get a conclusion in just one book.

The New Watchers at the Well Trilogy Almost Lives Up to the Original Series

Jack L. Chalker's return to the Well World universe was much anticipated, and in the end pretty good. This new trilogy, Watchers at the Well, starts with Echoes of the Well of Souls, continues with Shadow of the Well of Souls, and concludes with Gods of the Well of Souls.

Long locked away in an ancient prison, a completely alien force found a chink in its prison cell the last time Nathan Brazil, the immortal keeper of the Well World where control of the universe lies, reset the universe. Now it wants out so it can have free reign of the universe and control of the Well World itself.

Alerted to the danger at hand, the Well World summons Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang, his new co-Keeper of the Well, but will they answer the call? Brazil is weary, very weary; keeping watch over the universe for all eternity has taken its toll on him and his is just too tired to deal with it anymore. And Chang, who is now estranged from Brazil, never wanted the responsibility that forced upon her.

As the threat to the safety of the universe and the Well World grows and Brazil and Chang ignore the call, the alien entity grows stronger; and, the computer at the heart of the Well World must stop at nothing to get the undivided attention of its keepers before it is too late!

If you loved the original Well World series (and who wouldn't?!?), you will want to read this series; if you haven't, then stop and read it immediately. Then pick up this second series and devour it as well.

An excellent Primary Source collection!

This volume, and volume II, make an excellent compainion piece for a servey look at British history. The chapters are arrainged to give a good over view of comtemporary ideas and issues and the excerps of documents are an excellent choise. I have used both volumes in survey courses of British history in college. One extra benefit is a chapter dedicated to the Irish question giving a wide variety of views. Many of the picks Prof. Arnstein has made are excellent choices as they are definatly not mainstream documents, yet are historicaly well known or give interesting views that are often overlooked.

Missing Pages?

I ordered this book for My English history class, and I was happy at first. I really like the stuff in this book that we had to read for class, and it gave me a new found appreciation for English history. Then when I got to page 274, the next page was 307! The pages weren't ripped out or anything, they are just not there... I had to write an essay on the passages in these missing pages too. Now I don't know if I will be able to finish my paper on time and I'm very upset. This isn't amazon's fault or anything, and I do like what I have read from the book, but these missing pages are making me rethink about ordering part two of the book without seeing it in person first.

One dimensional in its approach

In comparison to pre-algebra books we have purchased in the past, this one is just okay. My daughter needed this for school; if we home schooled, I would have definitely picked a different book. The definitions are written clearly but some of the explanations, examples and word problems leave a bit to be desired. There seems to be a real push towards the idea that there is only one way to achieve the correct answer. Fortunately, I have a degree in math and have been able to work with her and show her there are many ways to approach a problem. Math is actually a flexible topic - it is a shame that this book takes a one dimensional approach.

At Home Math Book

I purchased this as an "at home" math book for my daughter. It is not the same book she is using but close to the one she is using. The one she is using was almost $100 and that was ridiculous to pay. There were not enough at school for her to bring one home to use. It has been so helpful. The only difference was the page numbers were off by one or two and that was it. She had a test the next day after the book came so great timing Amazon.

Jethro Creighton is nine when his close knit family learns that hostilities have broken out. As numerous male relatives go off to fight for the North and the South, and after his father falls ill, young Jethro takes responsibility for the family farm. With help from an older sister and neighboring farmers, he copes with attacks from local vigilantes, and he makes mature choices about a cousin who has deserted the army. Hunt artfully transforms her grandfather's childhood experiences into a powerful story of family love and the challenges of war. He also weaves a great deal of historical information into this Newbery Honor Book, and adds a generous measure of old-fashioned country wisdom as well. Terry Bregy provides a reliable, low key narration of the descriptive text. Cassettes and case are sturdy and well marked, with simple, but effective cover art. Recorded Books' audiobook of Across Five Aprils (March 2002, p. 85) is narrated by Tom Stechschulte whose voice has a stronger regional sound and provides more distinctive voices. Audio Bookshelf's version, also available in CD format, is strengthened by placing a valuable author's note at the beginning of the story. A Coming of Age Tale Set in the Civil War - A Page Turner - Provides Lots to Discuss

I've heard this book recommended by many homeschoolers over the years as a must read during Civil War era history studies, and had purchased it for future use. Unfortunately when it was assigned the book was packed in boxes from our move so I bought the eBook version for the assignment! This fall I read this book aloud to my 7th grader as it was a parent-child discussion assignment.

Set in southern Illinois, the story unfolds over five years, starting just before the Civil War and ending soon after the war ends. Jethro is the main character, a nine year old farmboy who is the baby in the family. Soon all his older brothers go off to war leaving his sister, he, and his parents to tend to the family farm which is a lot of work. Jethro's father falls ill and all the farmwork then falls to Jethro. Forced to grow up before his time given both the family's individual situation and the unrest in the country, this winds up being a coming of age tale. At the start of the story Jethro was a little boy and by the end he is a fourteen year old young man.

Issues with the Civil War are debated and discussed in the story by the characters. An early situation is one of Jethro's brothers sympathizes with the Southerners and leaves the family to fight with the Rebels. This causes discontent, anger and hatred in the community, since they live in The North. Later the Creighton family is the target of hate crimes punishing them for the crime of the traitor son.

Throughout the book we are informed of the happenings in the Civil War as the family hears news of various battles. Sometimes we read letters written by family members at the battlefront and other times we hear the opinions expressed in the newspapers. The opinions of the public about the Generals and President Lincoln are also shared as part of the story. I felt this showed that the issues were complicated and that even a family raised with the same values could not agree on which opinion was the right one. Later we wrestle with the issue of what should happen to soldiers who ran away from the battlefield and also what should happen to the traitors when the war was over.

A subplot is the romantic love that develops between the fourteen year old girl and the schoolteacher who winds up fighting in the war. Her father had banned their marriage before he left to fight saying she was too young to marry. The girl matured in the war years and in the end we hope to see them united in marriage and hope he makes it through the war alive. (I'll not spoil the story...)

I confess I am not a war story lover so in the parts that detailed the details of the battles my interest waned. However I was rivoted to the book and wanted to find out what happened to the Creighton family in the end. I would guess that any reader who likes battle details will be most interested in the book but honestly the story is solid and moves along quickly so even if you just want to know what happens to the individual people in the family and in the community you will enjoy the book.

Character traits and virtues are clearly present in this historical fiction story. There is a lot to talk about regarding ethics and values as well as the topic of the Civil War. The book gave me a sense for what life was like for those who were both fighing in the war and those who were left at home struggling to make ends meet with most of the men in the family gone off to war.

This is a solid, high quality historical fiction book that I think every middle school aged student should read, hopefully in conjunction with a study of The Civil War. I bet they'd learn a lot more by reading this than by reading a boring old textbook.

I had been told that most would not like it, so I was pleasantly surprised when many ...

This past year I read Across Five Aprils with seventh-grade language arts students. I had been told that most would not like it, so I was pleasantly surprised when many ended up doing so. I think it was learning about what life was like for rural families in the mid-nineteenth century that sucked them in. Marriage at 14, 15, or 16; buying tobacco at age 9; taking on adult responsibilities as a 9-13 year-old; and the effects of war on those who fight it made especially big impressions. We had some wonderful discussions about these subjects and many others. Hunt’s use of information from her grandfather who turned nine when the war started made them wonder which plot elements were fact and which plot elements were fiction. I was able to use the Civil War elements to prep them for the Civil War unit in their social studies class.

I have read a number of reviews discussing the use of dialect in the book and the reading difficulty dialect creates. I would like to remind readers with this complaint that dialects are spelled as they are pronounced. I think our problems with them are that our brains are in autopilot and want to correct the words to Standard English. I used the dialect as an opportunity to teach the importance of learning to write and speak in Standard English. Dialect was also a valuable empathy building opportunity because I was able to point out that reading it was kind of like learning another language and if they were having difficulty reading English dialect, now they could imagine the difficulty others have learning to speak English as a second language.

Jethro Creighton is a 9 year old boy living on a farm in Illinois when fighting breaks out starting the Civil War. His cousin, two brothers, and schoolteacher all join the Union army while another brother joins the Confederacy. When his father suffers a heart attack, the task of running the family farm falls on young Jethro’s shoulders. The story spans the entire Civil War, five Aprils from 1861 to 1865.

Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt is a bittersweet book that reminds you that war is never tied up with a tidy bow. People die or are injured or can’t come home for various reasons. The story is told very well with the focus on how the war affected those left at home. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction or the Civil War.

About the Author
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (James Leslie Mitchell) was one of the finest writers of the twentieth century. Born in Aberdeenshire in 1901, he died at the age of thirty-four. He was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, essays and science fiction, and his writing reflected his wide interest in religion, archaeology, history, politics and science.

A Scottish Revelation

This is one of my favorite books. Though written by a man, it presents a woman's point of view in a harsh rural setting in Scotland at the turn of the century. Some people might find it tedious to wade through the first chapter because it presents the history of a town since the dawn of civilization: it setting, legends, and characters. I found it fascinating because it gave me the feeling, when the contemporary story began, that I had grown up in the area and knew the background on all of the characters that cross the main character's path. The main character is Chris, a young teenage woman who experiences her family's move to the countryside around Aberdeen, Scotland. Her vivid descriptions of the landscape, the people she encounters, and her family make this an uncommon story of a young woman's spirit and experience. Because Chris has experienced some education and excelled in her studies, her manner of speaking alternates between proper English and the rural dialect of the region, giving the reader a sense of what was happening throughout Scotland's countryside at the time: the intrusion of modernity into ancient rhythms and rural, isolated ways of being. Harsh, glorious, and heartbreaking, the story took me inside of Chris--her heart and mind. She is part of my memory now as though I had really known her and the contradictions of family life in rural Scotland more than 100 years ago.

Well worth the read

This is a classic of Scottish literature. The first novel is likely the most read, but the other two follow main characters through several decades of their lives. It is definitely a good read for anyone interested in the social history of Scotland's rural population in the early 20th century. The trilogy shows how all the social, political and economic factors of the times affected the poor. Too often, we only read/see how such factors affected the wealthy, e.g. the characters in Downton Abbey. So, the trilogy gives the reader a more rounded sense of what it was like to live through these times. The attempt to replicate rural dialects can be charming, but members of my book club whose first language is not English, found the language to be hard work.

The beginning of this book moves very slowly through the history of a small Scottish village. One you get through that, the story gets more and more intriguing. The characters are very well developed and the story draws you in as if you were living it. The author uses many Scottish words and phrases so I would recommend that you Google "Sunset Song glossary" before you start so that you can understand the meaning of them.
