HIGHLY ENGAGING for 5th graders

My students LOVE these- they are 5th graders and some of them are really low readers but STILL are reading these books and COMPREHENDING them!!! I can't believe how lucky I was to find these books.
The books are high interest for both boy and girls (another shocking fact, it is VERY rare to find a book that interests my boys these days and even rarer to find one that both the boys and girls like!)

Don't get scared away but the # of pages or the fact that they are high level readers- these are GREAT books for probably any students who is reading at 3rd grade and up.

These are a GREAT series also if you do accelerated reader at your school, my students are reading and passing the AR tests on these despite the fact that they are higher reading levels than they are "supposed" to read!

This is a dream come true series, nothing can compare except Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

Great for reluctant readers.

Although my 11 yr old son is a good reader, I have a hard time getting him to sit down and read chapter books/novels, but he loves these books. He gets through them quite quickly (a couple of sittings) because there are graphics on each page. They are similiar to Big Nate books, which he also likes. He might need to read several of these to get in enough reading time for school, but as long as he's reading, I don't really care if it's a long complicated book or something fun and enjoyable for him. If you have a "reluctant" reader, give these a try.

One of the great scholar/adventurers of the Victorian era, Sir Richard F. Burton was the author of numerous classic travel books documenting his adventures and exploits in the Near East and Africa. His celebrated Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah and Meccah has long been one of the great books on Arabia. Burton considered this volume a sequel to that work. It is a fascinating chronicle of his 1877 expedition to locate gold and other valuable minerals in the Arabian Peninsula.
In his younger days, wandering through Arabia with the Koran for company, Burton had stumbled across a "Gold Land," an area he suspected of being rich in gold and other minerals. At the time he had no interest in trying to extract its wealth. Twenty-five years later, however, when Egypt found itself in dire financial straits, Burton remembered his find. He informed the Khedive of Egypt about it and volunteered to try and relocate the gold field. The Khedive accepted his offer and promptly financed an expedition, headed by Burton, to undertake the search.
In all his travel books, Burton reveals himself to have been a shrewd and sharp-eyed observer. This book is no exception. In addition to the exciting story of his successful quest for the gold-mines of Midian, his account is replete with detailed observations and recollections of native peoples, wildlife, plants, minerals, fish, shells, and more. The author's extraordinary erudition and contagious enthusiasm for the vast deserts of Arabia illuminate these pages, which will delight any armchair adventurer or admirer of Burton's work.

Troubled, Mistitled, Schizophrenic

For the first time in my readership of Burton, the author avoids criticizing, belittling or scorning his travel companions, largely because his travel companions are little to the purpose.
Unfortunately, most of what Burton writes is little to the purpose. Like his other works, I expected this to be a knowledgeable travelogue and journal of discovery, but a discovery of what? Burton spends the first quarter of the book discussing Alexandria and Cairo before he gets underway (this last detail almost lost in the maze of other irrelevant observations). He names every sedimentary formation and every flower on his route, and then disputes or corrects every historical observation on Midian -- Biblical, Greek, Latin and Arab. When someone washes a handful of sand and exposes a tiny nugget of gold (presumably the intended core of this book), the detail itself appears as a small nugget amidst so much worthless sand.
From time to time, a promising anecdote or observation on a Biblical place or event raises clarity above the labyrinth, only to plunge again and at length.
Glutted with learning, too heavy for the non-scholarly reader, thick with observations of questionable relevance, and fraught with meaningless, private anecdotes, the book taxes the reader considerably. Use caution.

It was wonderful to secure this unassuming volume for my personal library! Filled with actual diary entries by Sir Richard, it carries the reader through a 19th century travelogue which bares unexpected fruit relative to the historical veracity of the Holy Bible!

Two Books in One

I found this book in the library many years ago. Now it is a staple of my preschool curriculum. It's a sweet little tale of Tito, a little boy who sets out to catch the biggest fish in the sea. You can stop here with little ones or for four year olds and up you can continue to see how the biggest fish in the sea teaches Tito and his village an important lesson. Appeals to children's love of large scarry animals. Beautiful illustrations.

Peculiar story.

This book starts off feeling like a counting book, though there is no counting, as our little protagonist Tino catches a small fish and then consecutively bigger and bigger fish until he catches the biggest fish in the sea. It's fun and captivating to watch these colorful fish grow into more and more menacing sizes. But after Tino catches the biggest fish of the sea the book takes a 180 and feels all of a sudden like a modern activist fable warning us to value fish because they have feelings too. Just as you think it's going down this path, though, our miniature hero reasons with this giant ichthyoid that has swallowed him and his whole town about how the fish should let him go because he never intended it harm and he was always going to release it, just as he had released his other ginormous fish. That and fish, as well as humans, eat fish so that shouldn't be held against him and his fellow villagers. The world's largest fish buys this line of reasoning but not without first getting a commitment from everyone in his belly to never catch fish just for fun but only for eating.......like I said, peculiar.

The drama in this book is not just about survival but about how a young boy can experience shame and humiliation, even unintentionally at the hands of his family, and be driven to do wondrous and ultimately (and unintentionally) dangerous things like catching a fish capable of swallowing he and his village. It is up to the resilient lad to save the day by finding a way to get the fish's attention and to reason with it so that it lets everyone go. There are emotional experiences of awe, satisfaction, derision, fear, and anger expressed in basic ways in the art of the book. In some ways this book is a more fleshed out and concrete "Where The Wild Things Are". It is yet another slice of life viewed from a child's eyes.

Recommended if you can find it cheap (not worth $40).

One of the few books I remember well from my pre-K days, I was lucky to find my own copy to share with my own children. If they were easier to find, I'd buy four to pass one down to each kid!

We are standing in the Last Days. However, when compared with ancient times, the gospel has been spreading quickly throughout the world in these days. Not only that, Satan has also been working more quickly. The cry of death is heard everywhere.
There is a proverb which says, “The god of death is riding on the buffalo.” But nowadays death has increased its speed to match that of the horse. Are you asking how can this be? The rider upon the pale horse is Death. The horse was the quickest means of transportation known to man at that time. So nowadays death is also spreading very quickly. Are you wondering how this death will come? I am not talking about death of the body. I am talking about spiritual death.
If a man was saved, received the anointing of the Holy Spirit, used to regularly attend church gatherings and lived a holy life, but then backslid by committing sin, he has fallen down in his spiritual life. This is what I mean by spiritual death. The spirit of death rides the pale horse towards us intending to inflict this death on us.
Moreover, those who die due to natural hazards such as tsunami, earthquake or riot will not go to hell. But we know that Hades follows this spirit of death because Scripture says, “Hades followed with him”. The spirit of death rides the pale horse to kill the spiritual life of believers.
When a man dies in his spiritual life, he will go to Hades.
Satan is coming inside the churches and inside the houses of believers by riding upon this pale horse. Those who give room to him will suffer Hades, experiencing spiritual death.
My dear Brethren, if you are in the clutches of sin, then for sure you will repent before finishing reading this book.
This spirit of death works in four ways. I am sharing with you what God has shown to me by revelation.

Stunning Collectors Edition

Having only an old 1994 worn paperback edition of the Lord of the Rings, I wanted to purchase a version that I could read and display for many years to come. I did a ton of research and decided upon this version (ISBN 116-1749849-2513827), illustrated by Alan Lee and published by Harper Collins in June 2014 (I am adding these details because the Amazon.com site does not make it clear what this version is). Please note that this particular printing is NOT available in the US but any Tolkien or LotR devotee should not be deterred (Frodo wouldn't have been!). I must say that this is the finest published one-volume version of the LotR that I have ever laid eyes upon, and is well worth every penny. It includes approximately 50 high-quality color illustrations by Alan Lee, which even for a 30-something like me makes the reading experience exceptional. The front and back covers are made of durable, high-quality cloth (as shown), with a strong and handsome turquoise binding. The pages -- not just the illustrations but the entire book -- are glossy and made of "whiter" paper than you generally find, the margins large, and the typeset easy on the eyes.

For those who care about such things, the printing is based on the 2004 corrected text, with even further corrections. There are updated introductions/forwards by Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull, authors of the authoritative "LOTR Readers Companion," as well as by Douglas A. Anderson, who provides a detailed publication history of the Lord of the Rings. The full appendices are included.

Two-page red and black maps of Middle Earth and of Gondor/Rohan/Mordor adorn the front and back covers, with a map of the Shire before the first chapter. Also present are other essentials such as the Doors of Moria and the Tomb of Balin. The only drawback is that the facsimile pages of the Book of Mazarbul was not included, which I found to be surprising and a bit disappointing Also, the ring inscription and the Gandalf "rune" are printed in black rather than silver and red. Probably the main issue is the clear plastic slipcover, which is barely bigger than the book itself, and it is difficult to slip the book back inside it after taking it out. You are more likely to scuff the corners of the book. That being said, these are far from dealbreakers, and the joy to be received from owning this edition far outweighs these issues.

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go but those people who don't have as good of eye sight, because I know some people who tend to get headaches while focusing on small font, this set may not be for you. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

It's the best four books Tolkien wrote in a small

The books are smaller than I had anticipated, the text is small too. The thing is, it doesn't matter. It's the best four books Tolkien wrote in a small, easy to carry or conceal version. The cover material is strong and kind of rubbery, which is good cause if you are like me this will be the second or third set of the books you have bought because you were out previous editions by reading them too much, bending the binding, underlining paragraphs, and folding the corners of pages.

Given the choice, I would have ordered two sets just to give one to a friend.

which is a wonderfully informative book for navigating the lucid dream world

I've been reading many lucid dreaming books of late and realize this is something different. This is similar to the idea of sleeping qigong, which is a fast track to enlightenment because we are able to merge with the most illusive part of us that is all knowing and connected to everything, but that is cut off from our waking mind. I've not successfully stayed in a lucid dream to employ the principals, but my mind and my gut tell me they are sound and fascinating. If you just want to play around and control your dreams I'd suggest Lucid Dreaming by Robert Waggoner, which is a wonderfully informative book for navigating the lucid dream world, but if you want to evolve towards enlightenment then this is your book.

Without a doubt the best book on dream yoga or lucid dreaming I have ever encountered. Without a doubt! Andrew does an absolutely masterful job integrating the views AND practices of the East and West. This integration (and it is an actual INTEGRATION) creates a teaching truly greater than the sum of its parts. His presentation is extremely accessible to the lay and advanced practitioner alike, quite a feat when considering the complexity and scale of the corpus he is working with.

Andrew shares how he knew he had “come home” when he was first exposed to the teachings of dream yoga. I believe this explains the feeling I have had while reading this book: as though I am being warmly invited into someone’s home.

I am deeply grateful to Andrew for this work. Such a service, such a treasure, such a gift.

A thorough and accessible treatise on dreaming that feeds both head and heart

This book is so well conceived and researched that even the footnotes are informative and well worth reading. I found Mr. Holecek's audio recording of the same name just a wonderful, inspiring tome on the subject of lucid dreaming and dream yoga. In his own warm, encouraging voice he makes this rich practice accessible and clear. The book is a more detailed expansion on the material--clearly researched and thought out through a lifetime of practice.

To me, both the CD's and now this book have one overarching message--dream practice can enrich your life however you practice it, and it's do-able in some manner, shape or form, to each of us. So just get started! I owe him a great deal for both the practice details and encouragement along the path.
