A rather arcane subject, I suppose, but a good read and enlightening

In Ken Burn's documentary on the Shakers there was a line that a number of other similar communities started up about the same time. I was curious (as a layman) as to what they were and why they started. In searching Amazon I ran across this book that seemed to address that issue. It does, and without getting into obscure academic jargon. It is quite readable but has numerous references to academic studies and other authors. This author correlates the starting up of such communities (from the late 1700's up to the date of the book, 1992) to "troughs" in economic activity, troughs which are also accompanied by upheavals in the culture leading to the desire of some people for an alternative life style. As the author points out though, when times are good these alternative experiments tend to lose steam. The book also has about a dozen chapters each of which describes the history and development of one of the most visible communities (e.g. Shakers, Rappites, Mormans, Fourierists, and more) in what appears to be an even handed manner. The author also discusses how these communities manifested themselves originally as religious, then in the later 1800's as politicoeconomic (e.g. socialist), then as "self-actualizing" groups in the 1960's.

This book is about the environment and the ways in which human activities impact it. It is structured around two main themes, which are principles (the ways in which the environment works) and applications (the ways in which how an understanding of those basic principles helps us to utilize the environment and its resources). Additionally, a recurring theme throughout the book is the way in which we are pushing the Earth to the very limits of its capacity to sustain life as we know it. Human misuse of the planet's natural resources and disturbance of its natural environmental systems causes serious-if not irreversible- damage.
This book differs from most others about the environment in three main ways. Its systems approach stresses interactions and interrelationships between different parts of the environment; its interdisciplinary perspective offers a broader view so essential to an understanding of the complexity and diversity of how the environment works and its global scope shows how the most serious environmental problems require global solutions.
The 18 chapters are grouped into five parts; the introduction sets the context for today's rising environmental concern, demonstrates the usefulness of a systems approach to understand environmental processes and examines how the planet fits into the wider universe. The next four parts each focus on the lithosphere, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere, describing their salient environmental processes; processes such as those that shape climate, cleanse air and water, regulate water flow, recycle essential elements, and create and generate soil.

About the Author

Greer offers a cogent, numbing and utterly convincing account of the rage experienced by male aboriginal Australians. Her analysis highlights both the source of this rage and its impact on aboriginal communities. The black man’s rage is in no way of his own making, it is simply a natural and deep rooted response that any human would feel to events and circumstances.

Greer has turned the debate on indigenous politics on its head and shows the perversity of many aspects of the Northern Territory Intervention and other contrived government responses. These responses, in their myopic lack of perspective and conveniently whitewashed options, are a perpetuation of so much that is wrong.

It is refreshing that a commentator such as Greer, who is often reported to have lost touch with Australian issues, can nail this problem so neatly. The reader is lifted from what is an otherwise despairing account when Greer identifies a way forward, a shared vision which will nurture hope and ownership, rather than rage.

About the Author
Kathy L. Callahan earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Purdue University for her work in alcoholism treatment among the Tohono O'Odham (Papago Indians) of Arizona. She also lived for several years on the Laguna Pueblo Reservation in New Mexico. The author of several books, Callahan is a compelling speaker on metaphysical subjects.

Some Things Missing from this Book's Path

I have been doing considerable research on Medicine Wheels, not only on how Wheels are constructed, but, more importantly, HOW TO USE Wheels. There's too many opinions about construction (because we all have our unique interpretations of the basic forms), which, to the newcomer, can be highly confusing--who is right? There's too few books on using Wheels for one's spiritual practices. Exactly how do they work? There's more to it than just laying rocks down. Comparing this book to others, I believe it's short on construction details, which, are vitally important if one intends on REALLY creating a Sacred Site--a site that ultimately works for you. What I ultimately learned is that Medicine Wheels are not limited to Native American interpretation as Wheels or Sacred Sites similar in form appear all over the world--even some found under the ocean itself. Which, leads me to believe that similarities in Wheel constructions across many cultures who never (in past history) interacted--this information had to come from a single source--but, from where? So, what IS a Medicine Wheel? Your answers will have to come from several books read until you find YOUR answers considering the purposes of the Wheel's basic construction. I found much help from the DVD "Temple Making" by Freddy Silva, any titles by Alberto Villoldo PhD (whose credentials and 25 years experience working with South American Shamans provided immense insight)and the Sun Bear books, one of which is "Dancing with the Wheel." There's many other titles--read the descriptions closely before buying. It's not easy learning how Medicine Wheels work, particularly if you do not have any experienced person helping with your understanding. Unless you truly understand its concepts and build the Wheel with focus, intention, and, appropriate prayer, you may end up building a circle of rocks that will not open portals to other dimensions as the Wheel is supposed to do.

About the Author
P. Aarne Vesilind received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University and his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina. He spent a post-doctoral year with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research in Oslo and a year as a research engineer with Bird Machine Company. He joined the faculty of Duke University in 1970 where he served as chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 1999, he was appointed to the R. L. Rooke Chair of the Historical and Societal Context of Engineering at Bucknell University. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 2006.

Alastair S. Gunn was a professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The history of education, as it has been conceived and taught in the United States (and generally in the West), has focused almost entirely on the ways in which our own educational tradition emerged, developed, and changed over the course of the centuries. Although understandable, this means the many ways that other societies have sought to meet many of the same challenges have been ignored. This book seeks to redress this omission. Its premise is that gaining an understanding of the ways that other peoples educate their children--as well as what counts for them as "education"--may help us to think more clearly about some of our own assumptions and values, as well as to become more open to alternative viewpoints about important educational matters.

Because it is not traditionally included in the training of educators, very few have had any real exposure to non-Western educational traditions. Thus, the audience for this book is broad and diverse. Intended as a text for both preservice and in-service teachers, each chapter includes pedagogically helpful "Questions for Discussion and Reflection" and "Recommended Further Readings." The book is equally appropriate for advanced students in graduate programs as well as faculty members.

New in the Second Edition:
The text has been thoroughly revised to expand and clarify points, update chapters as needed, and improve the pedagogical usefulness of the text. A section on Mayan education has been added to the chapter on the Mesoamerican educational experience. One entirely new chapter "'Familiar Strangers': The Case of the Rom" has been included.
