Great book AND when there was a problem with shipping...

This books is a great history of the Rock and Roll era of the Roof Garden. The authors have done an amazing job pulling together all the schedules, some old contracts, a few REAL Tickets (included with book) and direct interviews with past band members that bring back many memories. I played in a band ("Brotherhood" that played at the Roof Garden several times. It has reminded me of so many experiences we had both playing there and the rich history of GREAT acts that played there. It also reminded me of hauling the equipment UP and down the big wooden steps. Well worth the hike - great stage and a wonderful view of the lake.

AND - when the book did not show up on time, the company communicated with me daily and sent me a new copy when we decided it got lost. Fabulous Flippers!!!

Grade 5-8–Xiao Qing, or Little Green, was born at the very beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and when she turned 10, Chairman Mao died. Because her father worked in the city before he was sent to the countryside for re-education and her mother taught first in a country school and later in the city, Little Green and her two siblings lived much of their younger years with their grandmother. This memoir, written as poetry, chronicles her daily life and reveals her perceptions of the world. Her story is revealed in snippets, much the way one remembers scenes from the distant past. The earlier poems reflect the emotions and fears of a young child while the later poems show an increasing awareness of the meaning of what is taking place. While poetry is an excellent vehicle for a memoir of this sort, the verse itself is uneven in quality. The author is at her best when describing life in the country where many of her depictions of the natural world are lyrical and full of beauty. The form works less well in the more narrative parts, where the poetry is not far removed from prose. Ji-Li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (HarperCollins, 1997) and Da Chen's China's Son (Delacorte, 2001) also tell the story of young people living through this era. What makes Little Green slightly different is the younger age of the protagonist and the immediacy of the experience provided by the poetry. Gr. 7-10. Chun Yu was born in China in 1966, the year the Great Cultural Revolution began, and in spare poetry she remembers the first 10 years of her life. True to a child's bewildered viewpoint and augmented by occasional, small black-and-white family photos, Yu gets across the grief at home and the school indoctrination. She feels her father's depression; plays war games against "Foreign Devils"; hears Mama defend her rich, dead parents; and sees intellectuals sent for "reeducation." Telling one person's story is often a compelling way to introduce politics, but because children won't know much of the history here, they may be frustrated by the vignettes, which provide only glimpses of the national terror and upheaval. A brief epilogue will help by providing some context about growing up "half blind to and half aware of the glory of the cause and the cruelty of the reality." So will pairing this with Ki-li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (1997) or Ange Zhang's Red Land, Yellow River [BKL D 1 04], also about the cultural revolution Hazel Rochman

A beautifully written story - not just for young readers

It's one thing to read the history of China's Cultural Revolution, quite another to see it through the eyes of a little girl who lived through it. In "Little Green," Chun Yu, born the year the Cultural Revolution began (1966), chronicles the first ten years of her life, from the revolution's inception to its ending with Mao's death.

What's startling about "Little Green" - the title comes from Yu's childhood nickname - is not just the vivid clarity of her memories but the beauty of her words. Written in verse, the book has the crystalline luminosity of Peter Matthiessen's prose and David Whyte's poetry. On one page Yu will speak eloquently of the gift of a blue silk ribbon; on another she'll share her pain - without being overly sentimental - at having her family's garden torn out after the state decided that private gardens were capitalistic.

"After a whole spring and early summer
of planting and watering,
the tomatoes were just starting to ripen under the green leaves.
Some melon flowers were still blooming on the fence.
The biggest melons had grown to the size of my little fists.
The sunflowers along the roadside
were only a couple of feet tall,
with tender yellow flowers following the sun around.
Nainai [Grandma] sighed.
'It hurts the conscience to destroy these crops.
What crime did the plants commit?' "

In this slender volume, Yu shows how her family is affected by the Cultural Revolution. Her mother, a teacher, becomes a target of the anti-intellectual movement; her father is sent for several years to a reeducation camp. In "We Saw Baba Only Twice a Year," Yu writes:

"Baba lived in May Seventh Cadre School,
where he was being reeducated.
The cadre school could only be reached by boat,
slowly moved by a long bamboo stick.
It took a whole day each way.
We saw Baba only twice a year,
in the summertime
and Chinese New Year.
After not seeing him for a long time,
it felt so strange to call him 'Baba' again."

The cover quote, from Maxine Hong Kingston, calls "Little Green" a "miracle" which initially sounded a bit over the top. But as I read the book and learned Yu's story, I didn't find this to be an exaggeration. For someone who learned English as an adult and spent much of her time in this country studying science, "Little Green," written with elegant simplicity in English, truly is miraculous.

I found "Little Green" so enjoyable that I began rationing it, reading just a few pages a night, to make it last. Thankfully, this is the first book of a trilogy, and Yu says she's already finished the second volume. I'll eagerly await its publication. Until then, I'll return often to Little Green's clear, bright lines.

Great for all ages

I really enjoyed reading Chun Yu's "Little Green." It gives a unique perspective of the Chinese cultural revolution from a young child's view, but at the same time explores very mature themes of cultural and personal identity. As a student of history, this book gave me a new understanding of the crazy times of the cultural revolution -- while creating a sense of beauty and wonder through the free verse structure of the book. I'd highly recommend it.

Little Green is a wondrous work of art!

Little Green is a wondrous work of art, like an ancient Chinese painting brought forward into modern time. Where a Western painter might fill up the entire canvas with paint, traditional Chinese painters used sparse brush strokes to vividly illuminate the very essence of their subject. So does Chun Yu use her poetry to bring to life the world of a ten year old child in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Like the unfolding of a Chinese scroll, to read her verse is to journey across the landscape of that time. We see her family, other children, revolutionaries and "counter-revolutionaries," political struggle meetings, war trainings, cold streams, warm meals, forbidden ancient poetry, and the sound of snowflakes falling past her ear.

Little Green is suitable for all ages, both children and adults. From her readings in the San Francisco bay area, I also learned that this book is the first in a coming trilogy. I give it five stars.

Well-researched, yet undermined by 2nd portion's lack of focus.

No Logo is a surprisingly well-researched book, if you can get past the obvious contradiction on the front cover and binding of this major-label production. Whether the "All Rights Reserved" copyrighted logo is meant to be ironic or merely obligatory concessions to the publishing house, it still reflects Klein poorly: either as a powerless pawn or else having a bad sense of humor.

Purely on content, however, as all books should be judged, No Logo quickly shows you this is no left-wing, hippie diatribe of over-generalization, with facts shunted to the wayside. Instead, it reads like a well-planned documentary, meticulously annotated and researched. Klein masterfully identifies the root problem of laissez-faire economics, market-oriented policies, and capitalism in general. For those of us who are a bit slow to comprehend the dramatic shift that has taken place in the free-market business world, Klein neatly diagrams the subtle and not-so-subtle shifts the private, for-profit sector of mainstream business has taken in its quest to orient away from developing products and focus on the development of brands. This paradigmatic shift has launched a new era of capitalism, changing it drastically from our predecessors' definition.

Klein maps out the expansion of advertising into all aspects of human life, the lack of "unbranded space", the Borg-like assimilation process that marketing initiates, devouring all niches, reactions, backlashes and resistance. With this process of lifestyle branding and perpetual advertising adaption, Klein shows the effects of this system of separation of brands and products. She details the flood of franchising, corporate mergers, private-sectors profit-maker's censorship, outsourcing, the exploitation of third-world labor, the creation of "McJobs" inside service economies and the growth of temporary labor and permanent "freelancing".

Klein derails, however, in her attempts to document the anti-corporate activist movement. What has been so far a masterful critique of globalization and corporatism focuses instead on grassroots activism and culture jammers. She spends almost one hundred pages describing (without unqualified praise, to her credit) underground rings of vandals and lone "anti-brand" guerrillas who deface corporate advertising by some irrational belief that their actions will persuade mainstream, moderate Westerners to change their consumption habits to ones approved by vigilantes drawing skulls and rewriting logos. If her discussion of them is to document an overall noble and worthy cause (that is, anti-corporate resistance), then addressing culture jammers in anything but a negative light only serves to tarnish an up until now, very polished presentation. Along with eliminating this episode, Klein would do her cause service by eschewing her description of RTS's absurdities in favor of a more detailed assessment of collectives and people's movements, such as the Zapatistas: uprisings that are rooted firmly in the reality of economics and egalitarian living-- rather than the short-term frivolity of dangerous quasi-riots, or the childish response of throwing pies at CEOs.

Klein also fails to precisely pinpoint what exactly her target is. She explains that it is more than attacking branding; it is about citizenship, not consumerism. Neither is it about attacking corporations via purchasing power. She explains much about activists' activities, but by the time she concludes her narrative, she has done little to address what exactly is the goal-- besides her vague wish for "unbranded spaces". The afterword (written in 2002) perhaps provides a better insight into what she was getting at when she talks about egalitarian movements and non-homogenization.

No Logo is an excellent book if one is interested in learning the largely ignored facts about branding, advertising, and labor politics; it is not a very convincing polemic for those skeptical of non-privatized solutions. With the debilitating portrayal of culture jamming and RTS as equals to the more mature approaches of student and political organizations described, No Logo undoes itself in short order; easily dismissed by those of the conservative persuasion. Although Klein does cover the anti-globalization movement with a broad, documentary-style brush, the pages of No Logo lack cynosure towards social cooperative, collective solutions, feeling reactionary more than inspirational.

this book is an excellent read for people trying to understand how modern marketing and branding works. Naomi answers a lot of questions about what brands are, why theyre important, how they work, and the consequences of them. I spent the first 5 chapters absolutely crucified by rage however, as her examples are very familiar.

As I just read this book, it didn't have the same impact it may have in 1999. Klein is almost optimistic about the changes she was seeing. However, 13 years later and addidas is still getting in trouble for using sweatshops to make clothing for the Olympics... Not much has changed. I didn't necessarily agree with her denouncement of advertisements, because in a way it seems a good advertisement is a form of art... but in general I felt pretty sad that we do this to the third world. Its important that we hold corperations responsible for the treatment of their workers in the third world...

A Stirring Call for Christians to Go Back to the Basics

I received A.W. Tozer’s “How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit” from Moody Publishers.

This book holds another poignant message which challenges the Christian to attend another meditative self-review of his, or her, innermost values, and desires, so that he, or she, may realize the degree of importance to which he, or she, holds the personal relationship to, and with, God. In the first chapter, entitled, “Who is the Holy Spirit?”, Tozer begins by first distinguishing the difference between the natural world and the spirit world.

Then, in chapter two (“The Promise of the Father”), Tozer provides a brief, but constructive, introduction to the Holy Spirit as he describes His origin, role, and purpose, as a member of the Holy Trinity (or, Godhead) and as God in the Christian’s life. Tozer is clear in his description of the Holy Spirit even as he establishes the fact that the Christian must depend totally upon the Holy Spirit in order to effectively live for Jesus Christ.

Next, in the third chapter, entitled, “How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit”, Tozer explains how the Christian can be filled with the Holy Spirit--- but after he asks seven vital questions:

1.) Is the Spirit-filled life for you (pg. 40)?
2.) Can you believe this part (i.e., to be Spirit-filled) is part of God’s plan (pg. 41)?
3.) Can you believe the Spirit is loveable (pg. 42)?
4.) Can you believe this is scriptural (pg. 43)?
5.) Do you want to be filled (pg. 44)?
6.) Do you want Him to be Lord of your life (pg. 46)?
7.) Are you sure you need Him (pg. 48)?

It is after the position of these questions, and some insightful commentary, that Tozer explains how to receive the Holy Spirit by referencing the Holy Bible:

1.) Present you Body to Him (Romans 12:1 - 2).
2.) Ask to be filled (Luke 11:9 - 13 and Psalms 2:8).
3.) Obey the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32).
4.) Have faith in God (Galatians 3:2).

Finally, Tozer explains how to cultivate the Spirit’s companionship as he cites the scripture, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3).” Perhaps Tozer’s statement (on page 56) not only summarizes Chapter 4 (i.e., “How to Cultivate the Spirit’s Companionship”), but it also harmonizes the message of this entire book:

“I don’t want to say this, but I think that some of you may not be ready for the message because you are more influenced by the world than you are by the New Testament. I am perfectly certain that I could rake up fifteen boxcar loads of fundamentalist Christians this hour in the city of Chicago who are more influenced in their whole outlook by Hollywood than they are by the Lord Jesus Christ. I am positive that much that passes for the [G]ospel in our day is very little more than a very mild case of orthodox religion grafted onto a heart that is sold out to the world in its pleasures and tastes and ambitions (1952).”

In this final chapter, Tozer also presents six important things which Christians must do in order to be filled with the Holy Spirit after he poses one important question (on page 54)--- “Are you ready for this?”

After this question, Tozer enumerates some of the blessings and benefits of allowing the Holy Spirit to take on His rightful role in the Christian’s life. Then, Tozer lists the six important things which the Christian must either remember, or do, if he, or she, is ready to be filled with the Holy Spirit:

1.) The Holy Spirit is a living Person [therefore, the Christian must relate to the Holy Spirit as the Person He is] (pg. 57).
2.) Be engrossed with Jesus Christ (pg. 58).
3.) Walk in righteousness (pg. 59).
4.) Make your thoughts a clean sanctuary (pg. 60).
5.) Seek to know him in the Word (pg. 61).
6) Cultivate the art of recognizing the presence of the Spirit (pg. 63).

So, to summarize this book, Tozer is explaining that while a Christian can have sincerely accepted and received the free gift of salvation offered to all by the Self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ, it is also possible for that same Christian to not be filled by the Holy Spirit, and as a result, miss out on a very intimate, life-changing and wholesome experience with the One whom Jesus promised would be our “Comforter” , and the One who would teach us all that we would need to know after Jesus ascended to the Father in Heaven (John 16:7).

This is another one of Tozer’s works which I have added to my personal library, and I highly recommend that Christians who wish to know how they can live out their purpose read this book. Tozer’s message can help the seeking Christian to understand that the Christian already has a purpose (Isaiah 43:7)---- the Christian just needs to know God’s plan for his, or her, life so that living out that purpose can be done (Jeremiah 29:11 - 13). But, this is done by cultivating an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Tozer’s fearless assessment and rebuke of the modern Church’s seemingly mass abstention from the influence and leadership of the Holy Spirit, and its widely evident conformity to many of the world’s ways and attitudes, further encourages me to take greater critical self-assessment in order to truly understand my personal need for more of the Holy Spirit’s influence and leadership in my life, and I hope this book encourages other Christians to do the same.

These people decided to compile all the circuits with related documentation and release it in organized manner.

Good enough for my need

I wanted a circuit for my son's project. I found it in this book. I didn't really need the rest of the circuits, well, at least for now. But it is worth it since that single circuit solved my problem.

I have bought most electronic circuits books from amazon. They all have one thing in common: you might need only a couple or so circuits from the whole collection. However, even a single solution can be worth the cost of the book.

Not a good buy for the dollars; should be a seriously discounted book as much is obsolete or cannot be built today.

The book is a bit of a fraud; I can see why they DO NOT let you look inside before you order. Some circuits are for use with 220 volts AC; not a standard in the US. Some circuits call for obsolete parts or parts that are hard to locate. Some of the circuits do not have a PC board layout, usually the very complex circuits where it would be most helpful. There are even RS232 etc. projects which are not at all useful and note for USB etc. that would be useful. And there is a lot of filler in the book. I am sorry that I wasted my twenty one bucks on this book. I will never buy another that I can't browse through first.

Good for those who know the basics of assembling electronic circuits but not for all

If you don't know how to etch a pcb board, nor drill a hole in a pcb, nor transfer a pcb pattern to the copper side of pcb, don't jump to buy this book. These basic skills are not discussed in this book. Go and buy other books that teach these skills.

If you know the basic skills though, you can buy this book. It can add to your collection of circuits.
