This text was required for my multicultural education (K-8 Teaching Class). It has been extremely helpful. The chapters are long (40+ pages each), so it takes a while to get through it. In military jargon, a lily pad means a kind of outpost or staging area, in fact a new kind of military base, scaled down from the major bases one finds in Germany and Italy. As they move across Europe from Munich to Belgrade, Istanbul, Odessa and Moscow, a new character emerges, Elmer Redway-a prefigurement of Edward Snowden-demonstrating once again how fiction can sometimes precede real events. Redway, hacker genius and whistleblower, deserts from the US military in East Europe and provides top secret information to the world media. 

Elmer thus becomes the exile, hunted by western intelligence services and living a life under false identities. He is protected by an underground rat line as he continues to expose the true nature of world events. This is his story.

There is no surprise that Gaither Stewart's final volume in the Europe trilogy is the best of the lot. His long awaited prose is carefully crafted to evoke a sense of loss and fear that an expatriate or more adequately an "exile" can only experience-- something vividly real in Stewart which hovers over the surface of the book. Stewart is the exile and chooses to defend his literary life with this volume.
His exposure of recent political crimes against humanity and the absolute slash and burn politics of western imperialism across the globe are certainly not incidental. And,WE are actors in this debacle of loss just as Elmer Redway is its catalyst.
All good novels set before the protagonist a choice. Choose the right thing (we hardly even have an idea what that means anymore) or join the herd of jackals and continue to bring humanity down to the Hobbesian level until it disappears (Social Darwinism).
Sartre wrote about WWII and the post-war period as a continual series of choices which will define the future and ourselves. Even if you choose to not choose there is no escape. The reluctance to choose, which gradually brought about the horrors of Nazi Germany and eventually to the strife of the world today is the ultimate choice. Doing the right thing-- making a choice for the good even if it means your life is the message. Enter Edward Snowden and his choices.
In literature, it is the same. The protagonist and antagonist consciously or unconsciously choose a path which leads to either further destruction or a denouement which sustains some semblance of sanity.
In the entirety of this trilogy, I have traveled around the world and back many times. I am Elmer Redway and Nikitin. I have been guided by Stewart and his trilogy
I am sorry this trilogy is over but I have gained much from Stewart and his cast of characters. I CHOOSE to do the right thing.

Gaither Stewart has become one of my favorite authors. He manages to integrate history into his works while fully engaging me. My late husband would be thrilled - I have an aversion to History as a topic; yet love to learn the "why's" of the world.

In this trilogy, while the story is of one man's awakening and adventure, every character is so well developed you feel you are in the moment with real people, not watching a one dimensional film. That is Gaither's true art, I suppose, his writing envelops you into a world - like dreaming in technicolor with surround sound. You are THERE.

The political commentary is strong, without preachiness - just a candid look at the play and the players. One cannot help but have their eyes opened, while their pulse races.

From the 1st page of the 1st book, to the last of this epic finale - I was immersed and in love with the story. I read it in e-form, and had to order the hard copies to have forever.

Time of Exile is the third novel, bringing to an end with a climatic conclusion Gaither Stewart's Europe Trilogy. The first two novels, The Trojan Spy and Lily Pad Roll, form a tandem, leading up to this last novel, perhaps his best to date.
The exciting story line is full of action, and the reader enters into the minds of the various main characters. Coming from different directions and worlds, each character aspires to do the right thing, not only in life, but also for the world as a whole. The poet John Keats, who is buried in Rome's Poet's Cemetery, had similar thoughts. It probably not a coincidence that Stewart has chosen the cemetery as one of the places where action takes place.
The reader will not be disappointed in this last novel of the trilogy.

Truly outstanding resource. It's really many in one: it covers a great deal of approaches to discourse that would otherwise take many volumes to read. I was glad to have purchased it and will look out for more from Schiffrin in the future.

I know, I know, Discourse is all about Schiffrin, I mean- she wrote the book! However, this book is now outdated and is far too long-winded and meandering. I suggest a re-write, Dr. Schiffrin.

actually pretty bad

I gotta give Deborah SOME credit; compiling the research and writing a book like this is no easy task. HOWEVER! If your intention is to learn about discourse analysis/how to do discourse analysis, good luck. I can't quite put my finger on why this book is so inaccessible (writing style, poor explanation of material/concepts(?)), but I would hope there is a better alternative out there.

Gary Born - International Arbitration: Law and Practice

Gary Born is widely recognised as a leading figure in international arbitration. His two-volume work 'International Commercial Arbitration' remains the most compendious and thorough treatment in this field. The author has now taken the most important and practically useful matters and condensed them into a compact, clear and reader-friendly work. Not only does Gary Born's International Arbitration: Law and Practice deal with commercial arbitrations under the major institutional rules and all the key issues they may throw up in practice, the author has also included a chapter that provides a very handy introduction to, and synopsis of, investor-state treaty arbitrations. Throughout, the authorities cited and discussed are from the main legal systems that arbitration practitioners encounter, with the book providing some comparative discussion of the major differences in approach between the jurisdictions. This book is to be recommended as either the first port of call for arbitration practitioners or as an overview of the practice area for budding arbitration lawyers or students.

Concise introduction to international arbitration

The reviewed book belongs to Gary Born, well-known scholar and lawyers in the field of international arbitration. It has been published after groundbreaking success of his magnum opus – International Commercial Arbitration, a book published in 2009.

That book received a lot of positive feedback. Professor Jack Goldsmith, Harvard Univeristy, wrote that this book has no parallels neither in law, practice or theory in international commercial arbitration. Professor Harold Koh, Yale University, wrote that the book is very comprehensive, accessible and full of different opinions.

The question therefore arises: Will this book repeat the success of the previous one? Before answering, we need to consider the following factors.

First of all, the Born’s masterpiece was devoted to international commercial arbitration, whereas this one is more general and encompasses such topics as international commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and interstate arbitration.

Secondly, the previous book consisted of two large volumes and encompassed almost all topics of international commercial arbitration, discussing in detail every topic, whereas in this book, Born only provides general descriptions and does not discuss in detail.

The present book is intended for those, who just started studying international arbitration. It familiarizes the reader with general concepts, doctrines, principles and rules of international arbitration. Each topic does not occupy more than half a page, sometimes less, which makes us think that it is written for those, who does not want to spend a long time for reading. It is certainly not a sole reason, for which the book is written in such a concise manner. One more reason is that Born intended to discuss and analyze all those concepts and doctrines of international arbitration, which have already been discussed before him.

The style and language is accessible and in most cases is very interesting. The book is attractive also for abundant practical examples, adduced by the author throughout the text.

One more fact has also surprised me in the book. On page 17, the author lists all prominent arbitration institutions of the world, but does not include International Commercial Arbitration at Russian Chamber of Commerce. It implies that this institution is not a leading one, even though it has strong image in Russia and CIS states. It is also a reminder that this institution is in desperate need for improvement. Not only Russian Chamber of Commerce should contribute in it, but also legal community in Russia.

Personally, I liked the book because of practicality, comprehensiveness, conciseness, clearness of ideas and concepts. Perhaps, it gave way to the predecessor, but it was not written to excel it, but to create convenience for the reader.
