The Stone Skeleton: Structural Engineering of Masonry Architecture, by Jacques Heyman

In this book, Heyman provides a thorough and intuitive understanding of masonry structures such as arch bridges, Greek temples, and Gothic cathedrals. Although the approach is firmly scientific, the author does not use complex mathematics. He introduces the basis of masonry analysis in the first two chapters, after which he considers individual structures--including piers, pinnacles, towers, vaults and domes--in more detail. This lucid and informative text will be of particular interest to structural engineers, practicing architects and others involved in the renovation and care of old stone buildings.

For PE's only
By No Fat Chicks
What is the time scale for the settlement and cracking of an old stone building? I'll probably never know, because despite its claims (and other reviews), this is a book for neither beginner nor layman. This is an academic text for practicing and professional structural engineers, and makes no bones about it; the very first sentence of the preface explains that the chapters in these books were previously published separately as articles in scientific journals, and then synthesized into a whole. And, like most journal papers, this book assumes an incredibly high degree of specialized knowledge. I figured that having an engineering degree myself, I could just brush up on my statics and follow right along; sadly, that was not the case.

The key thing to realize is that this is not some rehash of someone else's theories streamlined for the masses; this is *the* seminal work on how these building stay up, written by the guy who figured it out. This is not the book that references the original source, this IS the original source that other works reference. Read any other paper on the subject, and you will more than likely find this in the bibliography, or passing references to the "Heyman Theory". And, like all good niche scientific papers, it's very terse, poorly edited, and irritatingly overpriced. And while that's fine for Springer Press, you can't call your book "clear" and "lucid" and then pack it full of esoteric technical jargon.

As an example, here is a except from page 8 of the introduction: "If the material of the arch of figure 1.3 is linear-elastic (or obeys any other known deformation characteristic), and if the abutments are rigid, then a unique position can be calculated for the thrust line which equilibrates the given loads (self-weight and any others specified)." It's like this right out of the gate, and only gets more dense as the chapters continue. If you can't immediately recall, say, the difference between elasticity and plasticity, or what makes a structure hyperstatic, then this book is probably out of your league no matter how many times you read each paragraph. Or maybe I'm just a dimwit, I don't know.

A much better alternative (and potential workup for this book) for anyone who is technically inclined but not a licensed structural engineer is "The Science of Structural Engineering", also by the same author. It covers much of the same information, but presents it in a readable, historical context, details the evolution of how new theories replaced the old ones (and why), and has enough example diagrams to demonstrate the problems and solutions without your eyes glazing over.

All that being said, however, if you are interested in this subject either professionally or in passing, you will likely have to get this book at some point no matter what: apart from being the first, it's essentially the only.

For Layman AND Engineer Alike
By Ray
Jacques Heyman's text is without doubt one of the most interesting books I've read in the last couple of years. I became interested in gothic architecture after seeing for the first time in person a gothic structure, the St. Eustache church in the Les Halles area of Paris. It was 2001, and this first sight of such a building forced me to hearken back to my undergraduate engineering mechanics classes from a decade earlier. The stunning magnificence of my "find" in central Paris that day eventually drove me to more fully explore the structural operation of this style of architecture which lay behind the dramatic visual appearance of "gothic."

I began my little quest by identifying, and then visiting, the principal gothic structures in France (with the help of such great books as Stan Parry's introduction to gothic architecture). I then attempted to identify the key architectural elements common in all these structures. Finally, I researched the historical development of the style all the way from Suger's St. Denis basilica to the emergence of the Renaissance. But all this research left me with some unanswered questions. How do simple forms, such as the pointed arch, the flying buttress, and the barrel vault, actually operate? Why would such forms remain standing up, even when, in some cases, surrounding parts of the building had been destroyed in times of war, or perhaps by stone-robbing to build other structures (for example, structures at Ourscamp, Soissons, and Caen)? For that matter, why even use features such as the flying buttress, when other, simpler forms would suffice?

The Stone Skeleton thoroughly answers these questions, not from an aesthetic or historical view, but from an engineering view, where geometry, stereometry, thrusts, force vectors, the pull of gravity, and the physical properties of concrete and stone are the principal actors of interest. Although it is true that the book does investigate the subject through the lens of engineering (this is the books forte, and why it is such an invaluable addition to the subject), and the volume occupies itself at length with the examination of forces present in concrete and stone structures, most anyone with a moderate mathematical background and the patience to re-read a paragraph until the concepts become clear can profit from this text. In my mind, it is a missing link in the immense genre of gothic architecture texts.

I picture this text to have two related, but nevertheless discrete, audiences. The first is the one described above, the person who is interested in gothic architecture as an historical and aesthetic art phenomenon, and wishes to develop a greater understanding of the structural factors behind such structures. With a little work and patience, the text more than fulfils this need. But the second audience is the actual engineering student or in-practice engineer who wishes to develop a more sophisticated knowledge of the mechanics of concrete and stone structures. In this sense, I could easily see this work used as the textbook for an entire undergraduate or master's level course, or perhaps as a text for a directed independent study, where the end result is a comprehensive understanding of the mechanics of stone structures and the actual operation of the architectural devices present in gothic structures (barrel vaults, groin vaults, domes, arches, pointed arches, piers, flying buttresses, pinnacles, and so on).

I remember at some point in my gothic investigations I came up with a nagging question: why is the lower side of a flying buttress curved? Why not just lay a straight, diagonal beam from the outer wall of the building to the outer buttress pier? Was the curve added for aesthetics? Or was there some important design principle at play? Eager to find the answer and certain that this little fact would be easily discovered, I turned to my mini-library of gothic, only to be repeatedly disappointed (often, tantalizingly so, with texts that ALMOST addressed the question). The answer finally came in Heyman's text, along with many such similar questions. If you, too, are interested in such questions, this book is for you.

Calculus Study Guide, Solutions to problems from past tests and exams: MAT 137 Study Guide, by Sergio Da Silva, Joshua Seaton

Written by current PhD students in mathematics, this calculus study guide contains detailed step-by-step solutions to problems from past tests and exams at the University of Toronto. Based on the MAT 137 course, this handbook was written with the student in mind. While the problems originate from U of T, the material is easily comparable to any introductory university calculus course that has a focus on proofs. For a lighter approach, see the MAT 135/136 guide. After being teaching assistants for calculus courses over several years, Joshua and Sergio found students constantly asking about solutions from other help manuals. The solutions were either wrong or poorly explained. They saw the need for a more comprehensive solution manual that explained every step in detail. Before beginning their PhDs at Columbia and Cornell University respectively, they wrote this study guide to better help students having difficulty with mathematics.

A Worthy Addition to the Library of Any Freemason or Masonic Scholar.
By Michael Chesbro
Though not a book of great length, it's only 96 pages, "Freemasonry: A Journey through Ritual and Symbol" offers the reader a glimpse into the Craft of Freemasonry through its 133 illustrations and the secrets hidden in its text.

Freemasonry has been defined in many ways, but herein W. Kirk MacNulty gives us a workable definition in a single sentence when he writes `Freemasonry is a very old, secular, fraternal society which requires the belief in a Supreme Being as its principle qualification for membership and which is dedicated to the practice of tolerance, respect and understanding of others; the encouragement of high standards of morality among its members; and the performance of charitable works.

We see the history of Freemasonry from its ancient past, to the formation of the Grand Lodge in London, England in 1717, followed quickly by Grand Lodges being established in Ireland in 1725, in Scotland in 1736, in Germany in 1737, in Denmark in 1745 and in the Netherlands in 1756. We also see Lodges established under the Grand Lodge of England being formed in America, in Boston in 1733, and in Charleston in 1735.

We are then introduced to the three degrees of Freemasonry: The First Degree Entered Apprentice, The Second Degree Fellowcraft, and The Third Degree Master Mason. While W. Kirk MacNulty tries to explain the significance of each of these degrees, he does not seek to reveal the arts, parts and points of the hidden mysteries of Ancient Freemasonry. We are offered insight into the psychology of each Degree without, as is too often the case, simply reprinting the candidate's manual for these Degrees.

"Freemasonry A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol" has numerous illustrations showing the beauty of the operative Mason's Craft. We are shown the 16th Century stone-carvings from the flying buttresses at the Cathedral of St. John at S'Hertogenbosch, Holland; we see illustrations of the Masonic Tracing Boards, and we see illustrations which conceal or reveal many of the secrets of Freemasonry. Each of these many illustrations is interesting in its own right as examples of the artist's skill, but more so when one studies each illustration seeking the hidden mysteries it may contain.

I enjoyed "Freemasonry A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol" and consider it a worthy addition to the library of any Freemason or Masonic Scholar.

Freemasonry: A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol
By Benjamin Pimentel
The illustrations and pictures in the book are wonderful....if nothing else, people interested in Freemasonry should get this book for the pictures. The illustrations helped make the stories and principles behind Freemasonry easier to understand and visualize. The pictures and illustrations, by the way, are not MacNulty's creation, rather they are a collection of pictures and illustrations taken from various museums and Lodges from around the world.
Unfortunately, much of the text is infused with Freudian/Jungian dribble and psychobable which diminishes the book by giving it a junk science/pseudoscientific flavor. MacNulty tries to do what some psychologists tried to do with Beatle music many years ago. Most people back then listened to the music because it sounded different and made them feel good. However, some psychologists tried to psychoanalyze the lyrics and the musicians (John, Paul, Ringo, and George) by equating the whole thing with the Id which really represents the ego who is undergoing a catharsis because the superego is in denial. All this because the ego wanted to murder the father and marry the mother.... Well, you get the idea. It's so grating, like listening to someone scratch the blackboard with their fingernails.
To sum up: If you get the book and are turned off by psychobable, then look at the pictures and cover the main text up with your hands. It's okay to peek at the captions though.

Extraordinary Journey Through Symbolism
By G. Porter
Masonry is part art, part science, part philosophy. This is a great little book. I highly recommend all of this author's books, especially the Way of the Craftsman. He is writing more the initiate than the profane, but one of the best modern Masonic writers out there. A true adept rivaling Hall or Pike is scope and ability.

It Never Happened Again: Two Stories, by Sam Alden

Here are two exquisite stories set at different times in the author's life. In Ignatz Award nominated "Hawaii 1997," few words are spoken, but Sam Alden's imagery evokes the magic of a nighttime encounter at a Hawaiian resort. In “Anime” he explores the complicated dynamics of pop culture obsession. Alden is one of the brightest young talents working today.

Sam Alden was born in 1988 in Portland, Oregon. In 2013 he was an official guest at the BilBOLbul festival in Bologna, Italy, his comic Haunter was excerpted in Best American Comics 2013, and he is the recipient of the Ignatz Award for Promising New Talent. He now lives and works as an illustrator and cartoonist in Montreal.

Review
"Two thematically divergent, but devastatingly human portraits from an emerging cartoonist displaying the sort of storytelling and artistic restraint that often only comes after years of toiling away at the drawing board. Alden is a talent to watch."—Publishers Weekly

"Alden’s natural sense of framing and pace, his willingness to use silent panels to tell stories, and his beautiful (yes, beautiful) pencil images combined to open my eyes to a new idea of what a great comic can be. It helps that he’s also an excellent writer—both stories sketch out lonely, lost characters efficiently, and put them each through very different quests for meaning."—Slate

"Alden’s pencil drawings play beautifully with light and shadow. Each page uses just the right amount of detail, and no more, to accurately portray emotion. His loose, sketchy style renders the soul of each scene more perfectly than a finely detailed drawing would."—Foreword Reviews

"His moody, nuanced visuals and intuitive, empathetic character work […] reveal an already startlingly mature young talent. It is genuinely exciting to contemplate how he will further develop in the years ahead."—The Comics Journal

“When I first saw “Hawaii 1997” on Tumblr, I read the whole thing “without trying” — a compliment usually reserved for masters of wordless ligne claire cartooning. It’s extremely difficult to make a comic rich with atmospheric lights and shadows while remaining 100% easy to read as a comic. “Hawaii 1997” did it. “Anime” is a more complicated and nuanced story that admirably gives the reader space to form their own opinions on its protagonist. I’m excited to read whatever Alden does.”—Dash Shaw, creator of New School, Bodyworld and Bottomless Belly Button

"One of the top 10 most anticipated Graphic Novels of the year."—Publishers Weekly

"Since [Sam Alden's] 2013 Ignatz award […] was based on part on “Hawaii,” it is “Anime” that carried the burden of revealing whether that promise was going to be realized going forward. And “Anime,” his best work to date, more than stands up to the considerable pressure a young cartoonist faces when declared “most likely” by his profession. This is a volume, and a cartoonist, that in every way lives up to those expectations and sets us up for beautiful things to come."—Guttergeek

"James Joyce wrote that the moment of an epiphany in a story was when “the soul of the commonest object … seems to us radiant, and may be manifested through any chance, word or gesture.” Alden finds this in “Hawaii 1997.”"—Robert Boyd

"The emotional and communicative aspect is at the heart of [Sam Alden's] cartooning. The relationship between artist and audience is incredibly direct and even by merely looking at his panels you’ll have the feeling that they’ve been drawn only for you."—Just Indie Comics

Like a visual journal but better.
By neikaplay
It is very simple while also being very beautiful. The artist has made me rethink pencil as a medium. I am amazed at the lovely non-traditional images he got out of it. It is also very encouraging to know that he did this while on a long layover of about 30 hours. I think both stories are very different but each with something very personal and at the same time universal to say.

An English Affair, by Richard Davenport-Hines

WINNER OF THE POLITICAL BOOK AWARDS POLITICAL HISTORY BOOK OF THE YEAR 2014.

Published to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Profumo scandal, An English Affair is a sharp-focused snapshot of a nation on the brink of social revolution.

Britain in 1963 – Harold Macmillan was the Prime Minister of a Conservative government, dedicated to tradition, hierarchy and, above all, old-fashioned morality. But a breakdown of social boundaries saw nightclub hostesses mixing with aristocrats, and middle-class professionals dabbling in criminality. Meanwhile, Cold War paranoia gripped the public imagination.

The Profumo Affair was a perfect storm, and when it broke it rocked the Establishment. In ‘An English Affair’, the author of the critically-acclaimed ‘Titainic Lives’ Richard Davenport-Hines brings Swinging London to life. The cast of players includes the familiar – louche doctor Stephen Ward, good-time girls Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, and Secretary for War John Profumo himself. But we also encounter the tabloid hacks, property developers and hangers-on whose roles have, until now, never been fully revealed.

Sex, drugs, class, race, chequebook journalism and the criminal underworld – the Profumo Affair had it all. This is the story of how Sixties England cast off respectability and fell in love with scandal.

An English Affair
By S Riaz
Although I was born after 'The Profumo Affair' I have vague images of the characters involved and what happened, but knew very little detail. This wonderfully written book certainly filled any gaps in my knowledge, presenting a detailed and fascinating account of who was involved, what happened and painting a picture of an era when London was poised on the brink of change. Davenport-Hines (whose previous book Titanic Lives: Migrants and Millionaires, Conmen and Crew I enjoyed very much) divides this work into 'Cast' and 'Drama'. Indeed, the whole sorry affair reads something like a stage play, with a ruling class who felt they could do much as they liked, and a new group of men coming up behind them who did not subscribe to their unwritten public school ethos and revelled in making money.

Here, then, we are introduced to the people behind the names. John Profumo, the War Minister, who was married to film star Valerie Hobson. From the outside viewed as a golden couple, it was plain that Profumo had a roving eye from the earliest days of his marriage. Indeed, almost everyone we meet is affected by marital problems. From PM Harold Macmillan, whose wife Dorothy famously had a long running affair with Bob Boothby, to Bill Astor, who was on his third marriage by the time of the scandal which rocked London. The author cleverly unveils his cast, including osteopath Stephen Ward, whose list of rich and eminent patients included Churchill, Eden, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Paul Getty, to Yevgeny Ivanov, whom he was introduced to at the Garrick Club, the 'Good Time Girls' Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, the new generation of property developers such as Charles Clore and Perec Rachman, the 'Hacks' and the 'Spies'. He intertwines these cast of characters, showing how the morals of the day affected events. Indeed, the subtitle "Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo" is an excellent one - as we are taken on fascinating digressions, from newspaper articles (serious then, hilarious now!) on how women should go about achieving marriage to attitudes on women automatically giving up, sometimes excellent careers, for the often tedious 'trap' that marriage and motherhood could become. This scene setting is important - not until you read how a jury (all male) at the time saw the brutal murder of a young wife who 'belittled' him, can you truly understand the way women were viewed at this time.

Having brilliantly set his scene, the author then takes us through the actual 'Drama' of what happened, the scandal and the aftermath. Macmillan's secretary thought the 'Profumo Affair' did the PM more harm than anything in the whole of his administration. In a country which was heavily divided, where women were viewed as seducers and men unable to resist their charms, scandal broke. It is hard to overestimate how much the scandal affected everyone involved, as the press had a field day and people pored over the salicious details which greeted them every day in the newspapers. This is an excellent account of a time and a event which is still in the public consciousness. Who doesn't know the names of Profumo and Keeler and have some image of who, and what, they were? Well, this book may change your views, but I doubt you will find a better account of what happened anywhere. Thoroughly enjoyable, highly readable and well researched, this would make a fantastic book group read, with much to discuss and I recommend it highly. Lastly, I read the kindle version of this book and the illustrations were included.

A part of the Social History of England
By Amazon Customer
I was sixteen in 1963 and yet we here in Sri Lanka were salaciously interested in Christene Keeler and Rice Davis and their doings. I had only the vaguest idea of what happened and Mr. Davis has cleared up much of my curiosity. As a lawyer myself, Lord Denning was almost the holy grail of legal learning and it was surprising for me to find out that he too was just another man carried away by emotion and the thinking of the times. A time when homosexuality was still considered a crime, when society was built upon class lines and how injustice does percolate through all of history. Despite the fact that the book is long and goes through much that seems unimportant to the story, I read it through without feeling tired for a moment. It shows how some peccadillo can ruin a man and how Mr. Profumo was able to overcome it and come out a respectable man. Even though his suggestion to the Guinness heiress shows that the old leopard had not changed his spots. A good read, especially to persons of my age.

Fascinating
By Christopher L. Gilbert
Davenport-Hines locates the Profumo affair against the background of a hypocritical old school establishment confronting the social and sexual revolution which began in the mid 1960s. The "scandal" was largely manufactured by the popular press. Its victims, Profumo, Ward, Keeler and Rice-Davis, were pawns in the bigger game between the press barons, aided and abetted now as then by unscrupulous journalists, and the Macmillan government. Macmillan behaved honourably, the Labour opposition less so. Strongly recommended..
